One such database is the Online Transaction Processing (OLTP) in North

America Dental Group; this is a database on which a single computer application is run. OLTP in

North America Dental Group is comprised of different transactional applications for example, patient information, human resource, lab system, financial systems and electronic health record

(EHR) (Thomson et al, 2014). OLTP in the company is easy to use since it is set on a single application; this is important in ensuring organization and coordination in large companies such as North American Dental Group which depend on several databases to function effectively.

The importance or purpose of OLTP in this health company is that it supports the external storage and backing up of data in order to prevent information loss (McGonigle &

Mastrian, 2015). Moreover, this database promotes data integrity, accuracy and standardization, since it possesses front and back end software which enforces data integrity (Oppel, 2009).

OLTP also allows the organization to capture large amounts of data and supports speedy processing of common transactions such as payment and laboratory results (Joos et al, 2014).

Although most of the staff at North American Dental Group uses OLTP, the primary users are healthcare professionals such as nurses, doctors and laboratory technicians. The database is currently updated since it has a team of experts in its provider service center who are tasked with ensuring that online transaction processing in the company is not only working effectively and efficiently, but also regularly updated to keep up with the standards in the market

(Joos et al, 2014)

References ONLINE TRANSACTION PROCESSING DATABASE 3

Oppel, A. 2009, Databases: A beginner’s guide, New York: McGraw Hill.

Joos, I.M., Nelson, R., & Smith, M.J. 2014, Introduction to computers for healthcare

professionals, Burlington, Massachusetts: Jones & Bartlett Learning.

McGonigle, D. & Mastrian, K. 2015, Nursing informatics and the foundation of knowledge (3rd

ed.), Burlington, MA: Jones & Bartlett.

Thomson, A., Diamond, T., Shu-Chun, W., Kun, R., Philip, S., & Abadi, D. 2014, 'Fast

Distributed Transactions and Strongly Consistent Replication for OLTP Database

Systems', ACM Transactions On Database Systems, 39, 2, pp. 11:1-11:39 ONLINE TRANSACTION PROCESSING DATABASE 4

Paper title: Writer’s Choice

Pages: 1, Double Spaced

Academic level: University

Discipline: Nursing

Paper Format: APA

Sources: 4
