Join the City of Surprise on Saturday, May 29th for the 4th annual Memorial Day Parade at the Surprise Recreation Campus. The parade, which has over 80 entries, will travel down Bullard Ave in front of the Surprise Stadium. The event will begin at 6:30am with a pancake breakfast sponsored by Archie’s Delicatessen. The cost of the breakfast is $3. The parade will begin at 8:30 am followed by a wreath laying ceremony in the library parking lot near the memorial. Col. Mark Holland from Luke Air Force Base will be honored as Grand Marshal for the Parade. Col. Mark Holland is Commander of the 56th Medical Group at Luke Air Force Base and is responsible for all medical care and medical support to the 56th Fighter Wing. He serves as the Chief Executive Officer of a multispecialty clinic and a dental clinic. He is also responsible for the behavior health services for more than 84,000 Department of Defense beneficiaries. SURPRISE INVITED TO SPEAK AT NATIONAL CONFERENCE. The Granicus Corporation has invited the Communications Department to make a presentation at its national conference this summer in San Francisco. In their invitation, Granicus said, “As a Sunny Award winner and 2009 Granicus Top Performer for most archives viewed, we think you have a great story to tell about the success of your open government initiatives.” Granicus provides the software that allows for live streaming and searchable agendas for council meetings, as well as storage that permits Surprise to make hours of programs and meetings available for on line review. The Sunny Award was given the city earlier this year by the Sunshine Review, which monitors government websites nationally for transparency and openness. AQUATICS. Over 100 children age 6 and under will enjoy a fun filled beach party at the Surprise Aquatic Center this Friday from 10 am – 12 pm. There will be games, prizes and crafts included. Both aquatic facilities open this Saturday for open swim. The Aquatic Center will be open noon – 5 pm over the holiday weekend and the Hollyhock Community Pool will be open noon – 4 pm. TENNIS. Surprise Tennis & Racquet Complex is hosting the USTA Southwest US Open Qualifying Tournament, June 1-3. Men and women will be competing to qualify in the national tournament which then earns them a spot to qualify in the US Open Qualifying Tournament this summer. The men will have a 32 draw and the women a 16 draw. Admission is free to watch. Matches start each day 8 am. CANCER TREATMENT CENTERS OF AMERICA TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS. Tickets are on-sale now for the 3rd Annual Cancer Treatment Centers of America Tennis Championships. This year’s event, to be held October 20 – 24, will feature John McEnroe, Michael Chang, and Jim Courier, representing twelve Mayor & Council -2- May 28, 2010 Grand Slam Titles. Tennis legends Jimmy Arias, Wayne Ferreira, Aaron Krickstein, Mark Philippoussis, and Mikael Pernfors will round out the eight-man playing field. New to this year’s event is mixed doubles matches to be played on Saturday, October 23 during Session 5 (Noon) and Session 6 (6pm). Mixed Doubles will feature Grand Slam Champions Anna Kournikova and Tracy Austin paired with Tennis Legends who will be competing throughout the event. Over 50 TV Commercials are running state-wide during the French Open Tennis Event beginning on ESPN during the week and NBC 12 throughout the weekend. SPORTS. The 2010 Surprise High School Wood Bat Tournament will take place May 26-29 at the Recreation Campus. Sixteen of the top 4A and 5A schools will participate. Cal Ripken Baseball and Babe Ruth Girls Softball League Tournaments are underway this week. Eighty four teams in six different divisions are vying for the opportunity to play their championship game in the Surprise Stadium. SURPRISE STADIUM. The AZBCA High School All Star Baseball Games start this weekend at the Surprise Recreation Campus – Surprise Stadium. The all star games, which are Saturday, May 29 (3A and 1A /2A), June 4 (5AI and 5AII) & June 5 (4AI and 4AII), feature 240 of Arizona’s top baseball high school seniors voted on by Arizona Baseball Coaches.
