<p>Catherine Maher - Port Phillip Library Service</p><p>I am a rock star. Groupies? Tick. Outrageous outfits? Tick. Screaming audience? TICK. I’m best known for “Inanay”, but “The Wheels on the Bus” brings the house down... I host a regular storytime at St Kilda library. Monica Dullard is the Beyonce of our service- her storytimes require crowd control AND she made this awesome video- but I love my fans. And that is the very thing that counts. It’s the relationships that library staff build with people that keeps them coming back. People count more than technology. Smiles count more than resources. Hire people who love what they do and, most importantly, are able to share that love. Look after those staff so they stay with you. People only learn when they feel safe. Create stable, comfortable and welcoming spaces. Encourage staff to learn customers’ names and use them. Moshe, a gentle giant of a man with an intellectual disability, has been coming to our library for years. We keep a basket of crayons especially for him. One morning he interrupted my storytime to tell me very loudly that he loves me. Some of the 100+ crowd were apprehensive but I made it clear that everything was OK by using his name and explaining I could talk to him later. It led to great conversations with famillies about inclusiveness. My kids grew up attending weekly storytimes in the same space I now host them- thankfully the carpet's been replaced since then! I am passionate about the work we do and the difference we make in people's lives. Libraries are more relevant and important than ever as we help bridge widening income inequality and a deepening digital divide.
