At age 18, she began teaching locally. When Aunt Lena first taught, schools house eight grades in one room heated by a wood stove. Water was drawn from a well outside and the bathroom was an outhouse. Aunt Lena had to leave teaching in 1917 and return home to help her family on the farm.
