Using Solidworks for Ad-Hoc Drawing and Laser Cutting

<p>Using SolidWorks for Ad-hoc drawing and laser cutting</p><p>SolidWorks is an excellent alternative to Autocad for drawing 2D parts that you’d like to cut out on the Versalaser. The main advantage is drawing in SW is parametric, just like in the 3D part modeler. You sketch, then throw dimensions on it, and can change them to adjust your drawing on the fly. This tutorial assumes you can model parts OK in SW, which means you understand the basics of sketching, and applying relations and dimensions to constrain your sketch.</p><p>Here’s how…  Open a new drawing, select the Smith_ANSI_C template, or if that’s not available, just select the default drawing template. If you use the default template, it will open the Sheet properties dialog, select a C size drawing, and uncheck Display Sheet Format. In the Smith template, click the right mouse in the drawing, select Properties… to get the Sheet Properties up.  Go to Tools → Options… In Options select the Document Properties tab. Select Line Font and change visible edges to thickness thin.  Right mouse on the toolbar, in the list of toolbars available, check the Layer one.  Open the Layer dialog. Add two new layers, one called cut and one called dimensions. Change the color of the cut layer to red.  Set the active layer to cut, and draw your geometry.  Set the active layer to dimensions and setup your dimensions. If you mess this up and put dimensions in the cut layer, they can easily be moved to the dimension layer by group selecting all the dimensions and then selecting the dimension layer.  When your ready to print, open the layer dialog and click on the lightbulb icon. This will turn off the dimension layer and hide them. You can click this again to put them back if you wish.  Once the dimensions are hidden, you can print. Select File → Print… Select the VL300 printer, and under System Options, select line weights… Change the thin line weight to either .002 if your using inches, or .05 if in metric units.</p><p>Tip: Once you’ve done this setup, save the drawing, call it something like adhoc_versalaser.slddrw You have it all setup for the next time you just need to whip off a quick sketch for the laser.
