<p> University of Nebraska Medical Center Clinical Laboratory Science Program Guidelines for Online Communication</p><p>Students</p><p>Recommended Computer Requirements</p><p>Each student will need access to a computer with the following features to assure access to online course information.</p><p>Processor: 2.0 GHz Pentium/Celeron/AMD or higher Memory: 512Mb RAM or higher Storage: 40Gb Hard Drive or higher Operating System: Windows XP (Home or Professional edition) or higher Web Browser: Internet Explorer 6.0 (or higher) Internet Access: High Speed Cable Internet or DSL modem (firewall free) and active email account* Software: Microsoft Office 2003 (includes Word, Excel, PowerPoint)** Real Player (Free Download) Updated antivirus software (McAfee recommended) Java (Free Download) Adobe Flash Player (Free Download)</p><p>* Students are responsible for obtaining and maintaining an active email account. It will be necessary for students to clean out their mailbox routinely and make sure that their Internet Service Provider allows messages and attachments from unmc.edu and Nebraska Medical Center accounts.</p><p>Technical Competency Skills Skill: Windows XP or higher You should have a functional understanding of the Windows desktop, such as the ability to: ● Start and close a program (i.e. open Word documents, Power Point and Adobe files) ● Use the taskbar ● Use the Web Browser (preferably Microsoft Internet Explorer) ● Use Windows Explorer (file manager) ● Respond to and close Dialog Boxes (a popup box with additional information) ● Use the Help feature ● Multitask using at least two separate programs (minimizing and maximizing program windows to move from one program to another)</p><p>Page 1 of 3 Guidelines for Online Communication - Student</p><p>Technical Competency Skills – continued Skill: Office Software Packages You should have basic knowledge of how to use Microsoft Office XP (or higher), including Word, PowerPoint and Adobe Acrobat.</p><p>Skill: Internet You should have a functional understanding of the following: ● Print ● Search ● Browse ● Download files ● Install plug-ins and/or software</p><p>Skill: E-Mail You should have a functional understanding of the following: ● Send, receive, and delete messages ● Attach and detach files ● View and launch attached files ● Print messages</p><p>.</p><p>Page 2 of 3 Guidelines for Online Communication - Student</p><p>Student Guidelines ● E-mails from students must have a subject line that includes “BB Prep Course” in the subject line. ● Sending e-mail from Blackboard (Bb): E-mails can be sent to course faculty directly from Bb by going to the “Communication” tab on the left in the course directory. Then select “Send e-mail” and “Select Users”. Scroll through the list until you find the name of the person/s you want to e-mail. Highlight the name and click on the > arrow. That should move the name to the right side. You can move more than one name per message. Then fill in the subject and your message and click submit at the bottom of the page. ● Faculty will reply to students’ emails during working hours Monday 0800 Central Time to Friday 1500 Central Time. Faculty will be unavailable to respond to students on days the University is closed; this includes weekends and holiday breaks. ● Students are responsible for obtaining and maintaining an active email account. It will be necessary for students to clean out their mailbox routinely and make sure that their Internet Service Provider allows messages and attachments from unmc.edu and Nebraska Medical Center accounts. ● Students should be sure the correct e-mail account has been entered into Blackboard. To verify this: o Login to Blackboard and on the default home page, go to the box on the left-hand side labeled “Tools”. o In that box, click on “Personal Information”. o Click on “Edit Personal Information”. Here you can verify that your email address is correct. If it is not correct, you should correct it and click “Submit”.</p><p>Page 3 of 3 </p>
