<p> Bright Star Road Runners 1st Parent Meeting: Monday, September 8, 2008</p><p>School Web Page: http://brightstar.dce.schoolinsites.com Email from Web Page: [email protected]</p><p>PURPOSE: The purpose of Road Runners is to provide children an opportunity to enhance their running abilities, and it is open to all children in grades K-5. This program gives children a chance to meet other students in the school and the community. Road Runners is a self esteem builder, which offers the children a feeling of success when they finish a race and a sense of belonging by being part of a team.</p><p>PRACTICE: We want all children to wear their Road Runner shirts at every practice. Practices will be held on Monday’s from 3:00-4:00pm RAIN or SHINE. If it rains, we will do some activities in the gym, and if the sun is shining we will be running outside. There will be several safety stations around the course where parents will be in order to keep an eye on all of the runners. We encourage parents, who can, to come to practice and exercise with their child. </p><p>ATTENDANCE : Only 3 unexcused absences will be allowed for the year. These will be referred to as attendance “U”s. All students will be checked in and out at every practice.  If a child misses practice, a NOTE or email must be sent the following day to Ms. Hutchinson or Mrs. Clonts. Your child will receive a “U” if we do not receive a note or an e-mail. I will look at attendance sheets to follow up on any child who misses practice.  Practice is over at 3:50pm. Students must be picked-up from practice by 4:00pm. If your child is not picked-up by this time, he/she will be removed from the team. I am sorry, but I have other obligations. </p><p>AFTER SCHOOL PROGRAM</p><p> Bright Star does have an After School Program (ASP). If you feel you cannot pick up your child by this time, please sign them up for ASP so we can avoid any problems that may arise. Register the family for $10. The cost per child to stay is $8.00. Information for ASP is available in the main offi Road Runner Responsibilities: </p><p>Only 4 “U”s will be allowed for the year. This refers to behavioral and academic problems. We understand that students may have difficult times; therefore, we have a time of probation in an effort to help the student ‘get back on track’. Parents and students must remember that being a Road Runner is both a privilege and an honor. It is important that the children maintain their daily responsibilities in the classroom, both academically and behaviorally. </p><p>Road Runners Responsibilities include the following:  Grades . Bad grades will put students on probation . Probation will be for a 2 week period </p><p> Follow school wide discipline plan . NO OFFICE VISITS!!! . If an office visit does happen, the Coaches will be notified by the office and we will decide if they receive an “U”</p><p>First Practice:</p><p>Our first practice/short parent meeting will be Monday, September 8, 2008. Money will be accepted NO LATER than Monday, September 8, 2008. You are more than welcome to pay after the parent meeting. All checks must be made out to BSES and returned to Ms. Hutchinson. Thanks so much. </p><p>MEMBERSHIP: The Road Runner membership fee is $10.00 for everyone. The membership fee covers expenses such as sport drinks, snacks, cups, letters and bars. If you have more than one child doing Road Runners, it will be $5.00 additional per child. </p><p>Shirts: Road Runner T-shirts will be an additional $10.00 for those students who need one. Please note: We need all t-shirt order forms and money by Friday, September 8th. The shirt design is the same as last year but the t-shirt color has changed. If you are doing Road Runners for the first time, you need to purchase a shirt. Road Runners from the past can still use last year’s green shirts for practice. If your child does not have the new blue shirt with gold writing they need to purchase one this year. LETTERS & BARS: First year runners will have the opportunity to earn a letter, and students who already have earned a letter will have the opportunity to earn a bar. Students must do the following in order to receive a letter/bar:  Maintain academic and behavioral responsibilities  Attend all practices  Run in a minimum of 1 race in the fall and a total of 3 road races listed below during the ’08-’09 school year. You are still more than welcome to attend those races. Make sure that you sign in at the race bring me the shirt that you got for running the race so that I know you ran the race. If I do not see a shirt then I have no idea that you were at the race.</p><p>In the past I have noticed that students attend more races in the fall because in the spring is when all the sports start. So, if your child plans on attending any spring sports, I suggest that you get all of your racing done in the fall. We will be at four out of the five races in the fall.</p><p>Each race is approximately $10.00-$15.00, which includes a race t-shirt. Information and cost for these races will be sent home with the children. We will send out a letter before each race as a reminder. This letter will be in the gym after Road Runner practice. Parents need to provide transportation to and from the races. Last year we had some confusion on paying for each of the races. You have to pay for a race regardless if you want a t-shirt or not. Your child will not get credit if they run the race and do not pay for the race. Please remember that these races are fundraisers for the PE departments and by buying a shirt you are helping the PE programs out by helping them get more equipment for the students. Also putting on a race is a very time consuming process. Thanks for your cooperation with this matter. </p><p>RACE CHECK-IN PROCEDURES:</p><p> Parents please help your child find the Bright Star Road Runner tent in order to sign in before or after their race. The white tent will be at each race. If you get to the tent and no one is there, please make sure that your child still signs in. Children love it when the Parents are involved!! </p><p>Volunteers: We are always in need of volunteers for practices, taking times at the races, working a station during practice, help passing out snacks after practice. Please do not wait on me to ask you. Please step up and say “where do you need me coach”? It takes all of us to make this program successful. Do not assume that someone else is doing it. That is how we end up with NO volunteers! </p><p>Clothes: PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE make sure that your child has on their running clothes and TENNIS SHOES. If they do not have on the correct attire they will receive a “U” for that day and they will not be able to practice. Have your child wear their clothes every Monday and that way they do not have to remember to pack clothes.  Thanks!</p><p>Pick-up will be in the same spot but we will be running in a different spot. We will be running around the trailers where the car rider lane is. This is a much safer spot to hold Road Runners. When you come to pick your child up please make sure that you get in a line like we did last year and PLEASE do not get out of your car to get your child. This is a safety issue. Unless you are helping with Road Runners you should stay in the car line.  Thanks so much for your cooperation.</p>
