<p> Family and Consumer Science I Blair High School Course Syllabus Mrs. Harkreader Text: Today’s Teen</p><p>Course Objective: The objective of this course is to provide an overview of the Family and Consumer Science curriculum. The major emphasis is on beginning skills needed for food preparation and nutritional planning.</p><p>Course Overview:</p><p>August Reaching Your Potential Chapter 1 Growing and Changing Chapter 2 Building Character Chapter 3 Taking Responsible Action Chapter 4 Introduction to the Kitchen</p><p>September Kitchen Equipment Chapter 33 Safety and Sanitation Chapter 34</p><p>October Recipes and Measuring Chapter 35 Basic Cooking Techniques Chapter 36 Preparation of Quick Meals and Snacks Chapter 37</p><p>November Basic Cooking Techniques (continued) Chapter 37 Preparing Grains, Fruits, and Vegetables Chapter 38</p><p>December Preparing Protein and Dairy Foods Chapter 39 Guidelines for Healthy Eating Chapter 28 How Nutrients Work Chapter 29 Holiday Cooking Grading Policy: Assignments will be accepted up to five class periods following the original due date. 20% of the value of the assignment will be deducted from the grade each class period after the due date. Students who have multiple absences have equal number of days to make up all missed assignments. Special consideration may be given to students who encounter unforeseen circumstances.</p><p>Behavior: 1. Be on time and in your seat and ready to begin your journal work when the bell rings. </p><p>2. Do not horseplay or get too loud in the classroom.</p><p>3. Listen carefully to classroom instruction.</p><p>4. Bring your notebook, pen and book every single day. NO EXCEPTIONS!!</p><p>5. No talking when the teacher is talking.</p><p>6. Show courtesy and respect to everyone in the room ALWAYS!</p><p>7. The teacher should never see a cell phone, tablet or ipod for any reason. Phones should be on mute and headphones should not be worn during class. A warning will be given the first time, and then the item will be sent to the office if it is seen a second time.</p><p>8. Come with a smile on your face. Happiness is contagious.</p><p>9. I do not engage in negative or confrontational behavior. Be ready to step into the hallway for a cool down time if necessary. We can resolve all issues through clear communication and understanding.</p><p>10. Do not go into the kitchen area; pilfer in cabinets or drawers without supervision.</p><p>11. Do not ask to get water from the kitchen.</p><p>12. Let’s work together to make this class a wonderful experience.</p>
