Clu 3M Mock Trial

CLU 3M MOCK TRIAL

Objective In groups of 9, you will prepare and present a mock trial to the class. Each group member will be responsible for assuming one of the following roles, writing their portion of the group’s script, presenting professionally during the trial, serving as a jury member while the other group presents and submitting a reflection after the trials occur. Each group will receive their own case and should meet to divide up roles, discuss which witnesses will be called by both the Crown and Defense, and determine what pieces of evidence will be brought before the court.

Components of the Trial SCRIPT Each group member will assign themselves one of the following roles:  Judge (1)  Defendant (1)  Defence Lawyer (2)  Crown Attorney (2)  Defence Witness (1)  Crown Witness (2) Groups will then compile a script which they will follow during their performance of the trial. Each group member is responsible for writing their own lines, and will be evaluated individually on the quality of their submission. Refer to the “Student Role Preparation” handout to help you write your portion of the script and prepare for your performance. You can also refer to the script during your trial presentation. Each group must also submit one clean copy immediately after the presentation for evaluation. Remember to ensure your script follows accurate trial proceedings, uses language which is appropriate for the courtroom (refer to the handout titled “Courtroom Etiquette and Protocol”), and is free of spelling and grammatical errors.

PERFORMANCE The Mock Trials will take place on Thursday, May 19 and Friday, May 20. You are also encouraged to bring costumes and props for use during your presentation.

JURY While the other group presents their mock trial, it is your responsibility to sit on the jury that will decide the fate of their defendant. As a jury member, it is your responsibility to listen diligently to the trial proceedings, take notes as necessary, and as a group render a verdict. The jury will have 2 minutes to deliberate outside of the courtroom and must come to consensus before rendering their verdict. Prior to trial proceedings, you will select one member of your group to be the individual to return the verdict to the judge during the other group’s trial presentation. It will be the responsibility of this individual to render the verdict to the court before the judge when requested to do so.

REFLECTION Upon completion of both trials, each student is required to submit a ½-1 page reflection on their participation in this assignment. The purpose of this piece is to explain your reasoning for making specific decisions, identify and explain areas you could have improved upon, and relate this experience to life outside of the classroom. Possible questions to address in your reflection are listed below:  Why did you choose the role that you chose?  What did you learn about the rights and responsibilities of this person during a trial?  What is something that you did well during this assignment? What would you have changed?  What did you learn from observing the other mock trial? Are there any ways you would have adapted your role as a result of observing their performance?  Describe the experience of sitting on a jury. Was it easy or difficult to make up your mind about whether or not the defendant should be found guilty?  How about to arrive at group consensus? Outline some of the discussion your jury had before arriving at a verdict. The reflection will be due at the end of class on Friday, May 20. It is advisable to keep these questions in mind as you prepare for and perform your trial so it is easier to write in class. You will be given time to write your reflection in class after each trial performance.
