Students may also have completed Advanced Algebra and Trigonometry, but it is not required. Algebra III is for students who will be required to take college mathematics courses, but do not intend to pursue a career which requires an extensive mathematical, scientific, and/or technical background.

PREREQUISITES: Algebra II, Euclidean Geometry or Informal Geometry

COURSE GOALS: 1. Provide a strong foundation of precalculus concepts, techniques, and applications to prepare students for more advanced work. 2. Place appropriate emphasis on discrete mathematics and data analysis. 3. Show how technology can be used as a tool to facilitate learning and doing mathematics. 4. Develop students’ quantitative reasoning and problem-solving skills. 5. Increase students’ appreciation of mathematics through seeing a wide range of mathematical applications.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: 1. Define, solve, and graph linear and quadratic functions 2. Identify, evaluate, and graph polynomial functions 3. Solve and graph linear and polynomial inequalities 4. Identify a function, determine domain, range, and zeros, and graph; find inverse functions and reflect and translate the graphs of functions 5. Define and apply (a) integral and rational exponents, (b) the natural exponential function, (c) laws of logarithms 6. Use analytic methods to prove familiar theorems and find and graph equations of conic sections 7. Graph and find the values of trigonometric functions 8. Solve right triangles 9. Define and evaluate determinants 10. Identify an arithmetic and geometric sequence and find their nth terms 11. Use matrix arithmetic in problem solving 12. Solve problems involving permutations and combinations 13. Find derivatives of functions, graph them, and use in problem solving METHODS OF INSTRUCTION/LEARNING: The instructor will utilize the following methods for teaching the learning objectives: 1. Class lecture/discussion/demonstration 2. Question/answer 3. Math labs 4. Simulations 5. Group work 6. Audio-visual aids

EVALUATION: A = 90-100 B = 80-89 C = 71-79 D = 70 F = 69 and below

Homework/Classwork (10-15%), Quizzes/Tests (60-70%), 9-Weeks Exam (20%)

Each student is given a copy of this syllabus and a calendar for each 9-weeks.
