General Secretariat Meeting 01-17-04

Attending: Barbara Turner, Joyce DeSoto, Kathy Frizzell, Bryan Kelley, Father Mickey, Dewey Schwartzenburg, Madeline Van Note, Marty Ewing, Victor Power, Judy Borland, Mar Tano, Mila Ramirez, Mario Santos, Justin Rockwell, Cindy Conway

Minutes were approved as submitted.

Treasurer’s report accepted as submitted. Balance as of 01-17-04 is $21,191.03. Bryan says that he will set appointment for annual audit of the books after tax season is over.

Barbara introduced Marty Ewing as the co-chair from SF/SM and stated that Marty will chair the meetings beginning in March. There is still a need for a co-chair from Marin.

It was a joy to have 3 members of the Filipino community present for our meeting. We have a conflict in dates since they normally also have a meeting on the third Saturday of the month, but hopefully this can be resolved.

SF/SM has weekends set up through 2004, and the women’s leaders through 2005. The community is seeking leadership for the men’s teams in 2005. Judy Borland pointed out that the health questionnaire in use should no longer be distributed. We will have this researched through downtown.

Marin leadership visited the module site and took extensive measurements and pictures. Hank and Pete have a scrapbook to assist presenting the potential for these portable buildings to the Marin community. Hank has sent a letter to the Archbishop requesting his help and leadership in finding a home for Cursillo. Marin is canceling the spring set of weekends, but will be having a men’s and women’s set in the fall. Locker in San Rafael is working well, but it was agreed that we need an inventory of the contents. Lani Borges may be a source for art supplies.

There are still some of our belongings in the loft at Blessed Sacrament and the current tenants are expecting us to remove the rest of our property. We will attempt to coordinate a clearing committee for next weekend. Maddy Van Note has done an inventory of the loft area, and the table legs and electric light set is included in this storage.

Marin is sponsoring an Ultreya on January 30th, St. Luke’s Presbyterian, 7:30 pm

Cindy reported that the next Kairos Outside will be held in April at Mercy High San Francisco. They expect 30 team, and 30 candidates.

Joyce DeSoto is moving ahead with contacts for Fourth Day First. Upcoming team presentations include Tina and Jim Shinnick’s team. Joyce will be setting dates with Judy Borland and Merlo Pile. 01-17-04 Page Two

The Filipino community is in the process of renewing their direction and focus. There will be a Leadership Workshop coming up, and it is anticipated that this will strengthen their leadership and assist in finding leaders for the weekends. Membership in the secretariat is a three year commitment. Teams are selected from the leader school, and usually start formation two years ahead. The Filipino community has a strong heritage, and is working diligently to renew their leader commitments. Ultreya and leader school are scheduled once a month. They will be meeting in March, and will begin organizing to join us in our fund raising for the new center.

A lengthy discussion ensued on the new center. The staff at St. Vincents is welcoming us to establish our site there. We would need to hook up electrical, sewer, and gas. Steve of CYO stressed that it is important to them that Cursillo prove to be good neighbors, and not interfere in any way with the ongoing school functions. There is a good deal of political sensitivity around this piece of land, but it is hoped that the Fire Marshall in the purchase county will help forge the way clear in Marin. Mickey stated that the Archbishop knows we need a home, and is supportive. Our fund raising goal is $200,000. Moving and hookup will likely add additional cost. It is important that all communities join in this project together. Mickey, Roger and Barbara will attend a finance hearing in hopes of possibly arranging some line of credit. The main concern will be our ability to pay off any loan or expenses we incur. A tally was made of the possible number of Cursillo weekends which could be expected. This needs to be strengthened by full leader search from each secretariat to return to normal number of weekends per year. Previous history at St. Thomas More indicates that substantial monies could be earned from offering site to parish groups, and other non-profit meetings. More information will be reported at the next meeting.

Judy Borland offered that this is a simple picture. The risk is diminished by ownership of the two portables; the possibilities for the future are strong. She proposed that we not delay, and move forward.

Respectfully submitted, Barbara Turner/Joyce DeSoto
