It is a process in which people speak for themselves and make their own decisions.

COMMUNITY MEDIATION MARYLAND (CMM) is a state organization with offices in Glen Burnie which was established in response to a state-wide initiative by Chief Justice Bell of the Maryland District Court system to relieve a back-log of cases in the District Court system. CMM's vision is for every Maryland citizen to have awareness of and access to an affordable, often free, high quality community mediation service. CMM founds, supports and trains volunteers in centers throughout the state.

COMMUNITY MEDIATION UPPER SHORE (CMUS), based in Chestertown, is one of 18 centers throughout the state which supports the mission of CMM. These cases typically involve disputes between neighbors, generations, divorcing parents, local businesses and clients, school associates - any conflict that normally would arise in everyday community living. The Center was chartered to serve the northernmost three counties of the eastern shore - Cecil, Kent, and Queen Anne's. Originally an all-volunteer effort, CMUS now has three, part-time, paid employees as well as over twenty certified volunteer mediators who have completed a rigorous 50 hour training program.
