<p> Cheetwood Community Primary School Year 5: Curriculum News - Autumn Term 1 2017 </p><p>Class Teacher: Mr Hardy Teaching Assistants: Mrs Rogerson and Mr Nordon, </p><p>In Y5 this half term your child will be learning the following:</p><p>English Areas of Study:  The book Charlotte’s Web  Slam poetry  Recounts  Spelling, punctuation and grammar (SPAG)</p><p>How you can support your child:  Listen to your child read a variety of texts at home including poetry, newspapers, magazines  Encourage your child to talk about their books and complete book activities such as book reviews and character descriptions  Ensure your child learns the half termly spellings  Complete the weekly Big Talk homework and help your child with the editing and drafting process</p><p>Maths Areas of Study:  Addition, subtraction, multiplication and division- mental and written methods  Number and place value  Geometry – properties of shape </p><p>How you can support your child:  Help your child practise their times tables regularly up to 12x12  Practise place value and addition/ subtraction/ multiplication/division skills  Learn the properties of 2D/3D shapes  Look at dates written in Roman numerals</p><p>Science Areas of Study:  All living things, including humans </p><p>How you can support your child:  Talk about life cycles, including their own  Discuss ‘Do all animals and plants start life as an egg?’  Research the stages of growth for humans Topic – The Mayans Areas of Study:  Discover facts about the Mayan civilisation and explain who the Mayan people were and when and where in the world they lived.  Understand how they worshipped, name some of the main gods and know what they represented to the people  Understand how the Mayan number system works.  Identify and use a range of evidence sources to help understand more about the Mayan civilisation.  Explain what the Mayan writing system consists of, how words are constructed and what codices are.  Describe a range of foods that were eaten by the ancient Maya people and explain why certain foods were particularly significant.</p><p>How you can support your child:  Look at maps and atlases together, identifying countries that are in each continent  Identify where different countries are on a blank world map  Research the different areas above  Use research above to prepare for the following lesson </p><p>Useful websites www.bbc.co.uk The BBC site has a schools area with lots of games and learning resources for English and maths www.woodlands-junior.kent.sch.uk – activities, homework and revision http://www.mad4maths.com/parents/ - Maths activities http://www.topmarks.co.uk/parents/helping-with-homework </p><p>PE Pupils will be doing PE on the following days: Dance/Gymnastics – Thursday Please can you ensure that your child has their correct PE kit in school on this day or if you wish they can leave their PE kit in school all week and take it home to be washed at the weekend. As pupils are not permitted to wear any jewellery for PE it helps if earrings are not worn to school on the PE days. </p><p>Homework Each week your child will be given:  A piece of talk homework given out on Friday– this is to help them with their Big Write on Monday morning. Please find time over the weekend to talk to your child about this homework.  Other homework handed out on Thursday to be handed in the following Monday.  Half termly spellings to be learnt for weekly tests.  Please sign the homework diary every day.
