Creating a Glyph!

<p> Creating a Glyph! *This lesson is an adaptation of Tammy Worcester’s lesson “Glyph” from 50 Quick and Easy Math Computer Activities </p><p>Project Description</p><p>For this project, kindergartners will create a glyph about themselves using the program of Kidspiration. In the computer lab, the kindergartners will follow a set of directions to create a glyph. After the kindergartners create the glyph and print out their picture, they will use the information in their glyphs to collect data to learn about their classmates. Kindergartners will create a class pictograph to represent the data found in the glyphs.</p><p>Project Step-by-Step</p><p>1. Have the children open Kidspiration from the dock. 2. Click on New Picture. 3. Show students how to delete the middle bubble. Have them click on it so it is highlighted, and press Delete on the keyboard. 4. The students should then find the picture of the tree on the side, and drag it to the middle of the blank screen. 5. Click on the Super Grouper icon at the top, and click on the Create Super Grouper button. This allows the tree to become bigger. Now begin to give directions to complete the glyph. 6. Find the sun on the side. Click and drag the sun on to the picture if you like pizza. 7. Find the apple on the side. Click and drag an apple on to the tree for every person in your family. 8. Find the dog on the side. Click and drag the dog under the tree for every pet you have. If you have 2 pets, then you should drag 2 dogs under the tree. 9. Find the soccer ball on the side. Click and drag the soccer ball under the tree if you like to play sports. 10. Find the book on the side. Click and drag the book under the tree if you like to read or be read to. 11. Finally, click on any white space on the page. Type your name into the space you created. 12. Print the picture. 13. After everyone is printed, bring the papers back down to the classroom. As a whole class activity, make a class pictograph using the information from the glyphs. For example, for each child who said they liked pizza, give them a picture of a yellow sun to add to the class pictograph. Analyze the data as a class. </p><p>Outcomes</p><p>After completing this project, students will be able to:</p><p>1. Create a glyph to represent personal data. 2. Participate in a class pictograph to represent data. Technology Skills</p><p>After completing this lesson, students will be able to:</p><p>1. Click and drag using the computer mouse. 2. Type their names using the keyboard. 3. Use Kidspiration to represent data about themselves/others.</p><p>Assessment Suggestions</p><p>Assess if children are able to create a glyph using personal data.</p><p>Assess if children are able to participate in a class pictograph as a way to represent classroom data.</p><p>* See attached checklist</p><p>Tools</p><p>Computer, LCD projector, Kidspiration, white board easel, poster board, precut pictures of a yellow sun, soccer ball, dog, and book.
