<p> CITY OF BOISE IV-662 VEHICLE MECHANIC</p><p>GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES: Performs skilled mechanical work in the maintenance, repair and modification of all types of vehicles and equipment operated by the City; performs related work as required.</p><p>DISTINGUISHING FEATURES OF THE CLASS: Incumbents in this class are journey mechanics involved in the technical diagnosis, rebuilding, repair, maintenance and modification of cars, light and heavy trucks, and equipment. Mechanics work from operators' written or oral description of problems, user and repair manuals, and within general guidelines of City Shop practices. Independent judgement in determining and performing repairs is essential. Employees in this class may perform lead work over Light Mechanics and apprentices.</p><p>ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE CLASS: (Illustrative Only)</p><p>Tests, adjusts and tunes all types of internal combustion engines in a wide variety of applications; diagnoses problems in major components such as engines closed-loop computer operated emissions systems; diagnoses problems in engines and automatic transmissions and repairs or rebuilds as necessary; performs maintenance and repair of electronic vehicle management systems using diagnostic scan tools and lab scope equipment; fits and adjusts bearings, valves, pumps and carburetors; services, adjusts and repairs various power take-off and power delivery systems; rebuilds engines, brake systems, suspension, steering systems, air compressors, portable motorized equipment, hydraulic systems, starters, alternators and distributors; operates electronic diagnostic scan tool, lab scope and emission analyzer; operates metal turning lathe and drills for fabricating special equipment, tools, or parts; performs various welding, cutting and fabrication operations including designing, building and installing special equipment for police vehicles; operates brake drum lathe and rotor lathe; operates front-end alignment machine and electronic wheel balancer installs specialized emergency equipment including shot gun mounting racks, window cages, sirens, emergency lighting and strobe systems, communication radios, modems and antennas, etc.; orders parts and maintains inventory management system, entering repair orders, sublet work, and other data; provides technical assistance to small equipment mechanics in City departments on complex mechanical problems; may oversee work performed by light mechanics involved in routine shop work; discusses vehicle problems with operators in order to identify problems and explain what work is necessary.</p><p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: (Knowledge and Abilities)</p><p>Knowledge of the methods, tools, materials and standard practices of the automotive mechanics trade; of the principles and operations of internal combustion engines; of automotive air conditioning system function and repair; of the electronics in automotive applications including computerized closed-loop emission control systems, fuel injection systems and related diagnostic analysis; of power steering systems; of automatic transmission operation and repair; of differential assembly repair and maintenance; of repair methods of suspension systems; of safety precautions and procedures relating to mechanical equipment and maintenance shops. VEHICLE MECHANIC (cont'd)</p><p>Ability to diagnose mechanical and automotive malfunctions and determine appropriate maintenance and repair needed; to maintain, repair and overhaul gasoline, diesel, mechanical, hydraulic and electrical functions throughout the automobile; to read and follow wiring diagrams; to operate electronic diagnostic scanners and lab scope; to read an oscilloscope; to use electric and acetylene welders, lathes, front end alignment machine and electronic wheel balancer; to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others; to become certified by Ada County Air Quality Board for emissions testing.</p><p>ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS: Willingness to furnish one's own hand tools; to work out- of-doors for brief periods under adverse weather conditions; to work towards certification by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence.</p><p>Ability to physically lift up to 60 lbs. in order to change tires, move transmissions etc. Some positions in this classification may require the incumbent to obtain and maintain a Commercial Driver's License and to submit to, and successfully pass, a required alcohol and/or controlled substance test.</p><p>Revised: 11/78; 9/84; 6/87 Revised and Retitled: 9/82 Revised: 5/95; 06/01 Revised and Retitled from Mechanic: 5/05</p>
