<p>Shannon Baumert</p><p>2/28/2008</p><p>Drunkard’s Cloak</p><p>The Drunkard’s Cloak is also known as the </p><p>Barrel Pillory. The barrel had a hole in the top to put there head through it. Some of the barrels had holes in the bottom so that they could walk around town in shame. It had holes on the sides for there hands to stick out also. </p><p>This was used in England as late as 1862on soldiers in the American civil war. Also it was used in many </p><p>European countries. This was used for drunkards and scolds by way of punishment. Not only for them but for adventurous women had two husbands at a time was to wear this. </p><p>The way this works is by sticking her head through the hole with a heavy piece of wood. Some of the barrels were made out of oak. When they wore these barrels they had to walk around town and had people throw things at them and make fun of them. This put a lot of people into shame and made them feel very low. On some of the barrels they had scenes painted on them with some pictures of the victim was accused.
