PAUL’S CHAPEL AT 16 GROUND ZERO TO HELP THE RESCUE WORKERS AFTER 17 THE SEPTEMBER 11 ATTACKS ON THE WORLD TRADE 18 CENTER. 19 20 Whereas, a group from the Episcopal Church of the Advent in 21 Spartanburg opened their hearts after the September 11 attacks on 22 the World Trade Center and traveled to New York to work at St. 23 Paul’s Chapel at Ground Zero; and 24 25 Whereas, Lyndon Harris, who is a former associate rector at the 26 Church of the Advent in Spartanburg and currently the priest at St. 27 Paul’s Chapel in New York City, helped evacuate the chapel 28 nursery the morning of September 11; and 29 30 Whereas, on September 12, when Father Harris returned to the 31 chapel, located directly in front of the former World Trade Center 32 buildings, he was stunned to discover that the chapel had not 33 suffered any damage and stood completely unscathed amid the 34 destruction of the previous day; and 35 36 Whereas, Father Harris knew that St. Paul’s needed to become a 37 relief site, and, by the end of September 12, volunteers had served 38 two thousand meals of barbeque to the police and fire rescue 39 workers; and 40 41 Whereas, the health department shut down the relief site at St. 42 Paul’s many times, but no police officers would enforce it. The</p><p>1 [5176] 1 1 day the health department came back with a signed order from 2 Mayor Guliani, Father Harris moved the relief site inside the 3 chapel and called it “church potluck suppers” to avoid the health 4 department; and 5 6 Whereas, since then, St. Paul’s has been a twenty-four hour, 7 full-time relief site for the firefighters, police, ironworkers, OSHA 8 workers, and others, providing breakfast, lunch, dinner, and chili 9 or soup throughout the night. Chiropractors, podiatrists, and 10 massage therapists volunteer their services, and there are stations 11 with medicines, warm clothing, new socks and boots, and 12 beverages; and 13 14 Whereas, the pews are filled with blankets, pillows, and stuffed 15 animals, and cots are tucked into every corner. The walls of the 16 sanctuary are covered with artwork, letters of thanks and praise, 17 and banners from around the country and the world; and 18 19 Whereas, the crew from the Episcopal Church of the Advent in 20 Spartanburg arrived Monday, February 18, 2002, for their week of 21 service. They were Ruta Allen, Summer Booker, Rob Brown, 22 Grant Calhoun, Shannon Earl, Anne Elliott, David Graham, Kate 23 Haskell, Nancy Holmes, Fergie Horvath, Lynn Jordan, Bennie 24 Larj, Gail McCullough, Glenn McGee, Helen Mitchell, Carla 25 Paxton, Alice Phillips, Kay Powell, Perrin Powell, Ellen Rutter, 26 Marianna Taylor, Doris Turner, Keith Turner, Tim Ward, Holly 27 Watters, Abi White, and Reggie Whitehurst; and 28 29 Whereas, to the rescue workers, it was a wonderful new experience 30 eating southern cooking. For breakfast the volunteers cooked 31 sausage gravy and biscuits, cheese grits, eggs, bacon, pancakes, 32 and French toast. For lunch they had gourmet sandwiches donated 33 and delivered by Eli’s Deli in New York, and dinner was brought 34 in by various restaurants, including the Waldorf-Astoria; and 35 36 Whereas, there was a short service in the chapel every day at noon, 37 and musicians from The Juilliard School came by several times a 38 day; and 39 40 Whereas, the volunteers worked in two twelve-hour shifts cooking, 41 stocking the food and beverages, manning the supply tables, 42 keeping track of how many rescue people came each day which 43 averaged about fifteen hundred, keeping the candles lit, arranging</p><p>1 [5176] 2 1 the many bouquets of flowers they received, and doing anything 2 else that needed to be done; and 3 4 Whereas, the General Assembly is proud to recognize and honor 5 these kind and benevolent souls from the Episcopal Church of the 6 Advent in Spartanburg who volunteered and helped so many 7 rescue workers and mourners at Ground Zero in New York City. 8 Now, therefore, 9 10 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 11 concurring: 12 13 That the members of the General Assembly of the State of South 14 Carolina, by this resolution, recognize and commend the 15 overwhelming generosity of the members of the Episcopal Church 16 of the Advent in Spartanburg who traveled to New York City and 17 dedicated their time and resources at St. Paul’s Chapel at Ground 18 Zero to help the rescue workers after the September 11 attacks on 19 the World Trade Center. 20 21 Be it further resolved that a copy of this resolution be forwarded to 22 the Episcopal Church of the Advent in Spartanburg. 23 ----XX----</p><p>1 [5176] 3</p>
