Name:______Period:______Date:______

Immigration Project Do you think you know how immigrates lived? You have no idea until you are in their shoes. So, let’s do that! Imagine you are a part of an immigration family and learn how they lived day to day, week to week, month to month – for a year.

Directions:

1. You are to adopt a family of four (husband, wife, two kids are variant ages b/t 5-10). Create a family name and list ages and write this on your immigration record. 2. Find a place to stay – Look through the listings and pick a place to live. Note the price, the # of rooms, location, and the type of place, along with the special notes. Record this place on your immigration record. 3. Find a job – Look through the listings for a job for each member of your family. Note the wage, location and special notes. Record this place on your immigration record. 4. Find a way to get to work and home – Note where you live and where you work on the provided Boston map. Use the transportation listing and determine how you will get to work, how much it will cost, how long it will take and the means. Record this information on your immigration record. 5. Let’s eat. Now that you have a job, go get some food and feed your family. Record what you buy and how much it costs. 6. Once filled out, now complete your budget for a day, then a week, then a month, and finally a year. 7. Finally, write a one page diary entry detailing how a typical day occurred in your family.

Immigration Record Chesapeake High School October BCPS Office of Social Studies Immigration Family Names: Father: ______

Mother: ______

Child #1: ______Age: ______

Child #2: ______Age: ______

Residence: Location: ______

Type: ______

Rooms: ______Price per Week: ______

Notes: ______

JOB: Father’s Job: Occupation: ______

Location: ______

Price per Day: ______

Notes: ______

Mother’s Job: Occupation: ______

Location: ______

Price per Day: ______

Notes: ______

Child #1’s Job: Occupation: ______

Location: ______

Price per Day: ______

Notes: ______

Child #2’s Job: Occupation: ______

Chesapeake High School October BCPS Office of Social Studies Location: ______

Price per Day: ______

Notes: ______

Transportation:

For Father:

From: ______To: ______

$/RT: ______MIN/RT: ______Means: ______

For Mother:

From: ______To: ______

$/RT: ______MIN/RT: ______Means: ______

For Child #1:

From: ______To: ______

$/RT: ______MIN/RT: ______Means: ______

For Child #2:

From: ______To: ______

$/RT: ______MIN/RT: ______Means: ______

Market:

For these items, enter them into your Microsoft Excel Worksheet, and enter the number and tally them up.

Weekly Food Budget Summary: $______

Weekly Clothing Budget Summary: $______

Budget Part I

Chesapeake High School October BCPS Office of Social Studies ** Use the Microsoft Excel Spreadsheet to figure out how much everything costs.

Work: Wages per day (total): ______

Wages per week (total): ______

Wages per month (total): ______

Wages per year (total): ______

Transportation:

Price of Commute per day X # of days per week = ______

Wages per week - Price of Commute per week = ______

Residence:

Weekly Rent = ______

______- Weekly Rent = ______.

Groceries:

Weekly Amount of Groceries = ______

______- Weekly Amount of Groceries = ______.

*** This last amount is how much you pull in per week at your job.
