Solicit responses and list on the board. Tell students that job and career choices are often guided by 4 things: skills; interests; education; and income. Interest is mostly about what you like or what interests you. The next guiding factor is skills. What skills do you have or what skills you will need to do a particular job? We are going to begin our class today by watching a cartoon about job skills called Caveman’s Career https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EqCBVrLy5FM. After viewing video, ask students about their special skills..

ACTIVITY 1. Remind students of the four career-guiding factors that are being discussed in today’s lesson: skills; interests; education; and income. We have talked about skills, now what about interests. How might they guide you into a career choice? Have students share some of their interests and what career might be available related to their interests. ( 2 minutes)

2. The third career-guiding factor that we are going to discuss today is education. Explain to students that there are different types of education needed for different jobs. Some jobs require going to college to receive a degree. Ask students to give examples of these jobs. (Doctor, Teacher. Lawyer, Engineer, etc.) Some jobs require trade school or vocational training, Ask students to give examples of these jobs. (plumber, electrician, carpenter, etc) Still other jobs might require on the job training. (2 minutes)

3. The fourth career-guiding factor is income. Ask students: “What is income?” (wages, salary, money you make) Then ask why is income important? Answers should include various wants and needs. (2 minutes)

4. Tell students that today, we are going to evaluate a career choice using a scenario that I will give to you. You will be working in groups to decide upon the best decision for Alex. They are to work in their groups, using the 2 Handouts to decide which career path Alex should take. Tell students that they will have 10 minutes to complete the handouts and decide upon the best solution for Alex. He loves just about any kind of animal. In fact, he loves animals so much that, by the time he was in 5th grade, he decided that he would become a veterinarian when he grew up.

In middle school Alex decided to find out what he needed to do in order to become a veterinarian. He found out that he would need to attend college for 4 years and then, after college, he would have to go to Veterinary School for four more years. So Alex decided that if he ever wanted to achieve his dream… he needed to begin studying hard now. He knew that he had to have good grades in order to get into college.

By the time Alex got to high school, he began to research colleges and college costs. He found out that to go to the State University he would need quite a bit of money. His parents could give him some, but it wasn’t enough. When he turned 16, he decided to get a part-time job and save money for college. He got a job at the local office supply company. He began at a pay rate of $8.00 per hour and his job was to sweep floors and keep the store and stock room clean. He was a good worker, his boss liked his work and after 6 months promoted him to stock boy at a pay of $9.00 per hour. By the time he was 17, Alex had been promoted to cashier and was making $10.00 per hour.

In his senior year, Alex began to apply to colleges. He was accepted at the University of Florida and was very excited. He applied for scholarships and received some scholarship money. By the time he graduated, Alex checked his finances. With the money he had saved, the money from his parents, and his scholarship money, he was still short $10,000 per year. Alex applied and was granted a student loan for $5,000 a year.

Alex went to work the next day and told his manager, Mr. Brown, that he would be quitting his job in order to go to college. Mr. Brown didn’t want to lose Alex. He was a good worker, always on time, good with customers and very smart. Mr. Brown said “Alex, I don’t want to lose you. If you stay here instead of going to college, I will promote you to Assistant Manager and pay you $20.00 per hour. In 5 years, you could become a store manager and earn up to $50,000 per year.

Now, Alex will need to make what will probably be the most important decision of his life. Now it’s your turn to help Alex. Here’s what you must do 1) make all of the calculations 2) list advantages/disadvantages of each choice and 3) Discuss and decide what your group thinks Alex should do and why you made that choice.
