Name ______

Snow Day Activity

 Define fractal.

 Now we are going to create a snowflake fractal. This pattern is called the Koch Snowflake. You need to find a sheet of paper, a pencil and a ruler.

o Create an equilateral triangle with sides that are 4.5 inches. o Divide each side into thirds and erase the middle third.

o Draw two segments that are 1.5 inches each so that you create another point in the parts that you erased. You will be creating a total of three new equilateral triangles (or points).

o You are going to repeat this process one more time for each of the twelve sides. o Divide each side into thirds and erase the middle.

o Draw two segments that are 0.5 inches each so that you create another point in the parts that you erased. You will be creating a total of twelve new equilateral triangles (or points).  Open this link: http://math.rice.edu/~lanius/frac/koch/koch.html and push the forward arrow until you get to iteration 6.

 Give at least two mathematical properties that you see in this snowflake.

 This will be due two weeks from the date it is assigned.
