Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program

Tennessee Hereford Marketing Program

Montana Hereford Association – Hereford Influenced Feeder Calf Sale Sale Date – Wednesday, November 16, 2011 Headwaters Livestock Auction, Three Forks, MT

Thanks to the many consignors, strong buyer turnout and the crew at Headwaters Livestock, the MHA Hereford Influenced sales have been a huge success; with the majority of calves selling at or above statewide average market for that week. The goal of the sale is to offer producers who are raising Hereford and Hereford cross calves a reliable marketing option for the sale of their feeder calves.

In order to be consigned to the sale, calves need to be 100% Hereford or at least 50% Hereford with the other 50% being of English beef type breeding (Hereford, Angus, South Devon acceptable for other 50%). Only steers and heifers will be accepted, no bulls. All calves will be required to be dehorned if necessary. Castrated and dehorned calves must be healed.

We have put together a Consignor’s Guide” that provides information on health protocol suggestions based on the input we have received from buyers. The Guide is available as a downloadable pdf at our website, www.montanahereford.org. You can also request a printed copy be mailed to you. Historically, calves that have been processed followed the suggested health protocol and were Age and Source Verified averaged .05 more than those that had not. Age and source verification certificates must be presented to the sale officials prior to the sale.

It is suggested that calves should be weaned no later than October 1st. There is extensive evidence showing a direct correlation between the number of days calves have been weaned prior to the feedlot and their health during the feeding period. The program involves 2 sets of vaccinations, but offers the option of administering the first vaccination either prior to weaning, or at weaning. Please, keep copies of the vaccination receipts to be turned in to the sale committee as documentation. Vaccine protocol is attached. Additionally, all calves should have CHB ear tags inserted. Consignment forms are available as part of the Consignors Guide. Once you turn in the form, CHB tags will be sent to you.

Although we do strongly suggest the protocol outlined in the Consignor’s Guide, all qualifying calves (Hereford, Black Baldy, Red Baldy steers, heifers, dehorned) are eligible to be sold at the sale, as long as we can accurately represent their health protocol to potential buyers.

Contact any of the following committee members with questions!
