According to spokesperson Lynnea McFadden, the new name serves to reflect a change in the group’s primary service area from Marquette and Alger Counties to the entire Upper Peninsula. The name change also came from an effort to simplify the group’s name for ease of use.

McFadden adds, “We grew and expanded. As our membership grew, so did our number of conservation easements, and the geographical doors were opened to include not only Marquette and Alger Counties, but from the east to the west boundaries of the U.P. After 10 years of operating as the Central Lake Superior Land Conservancy, in honor of our 10th Anniversary of protecting Upper Peninsula Forestlands, the Board of Directors thought it was time to adopt a new name to more accurately reflect who we are as a land conservancy and the geographical area we serve.”

In other business at their annual meeting, the group elected Marge Forslin as President, Jim Matteson as Vice President, Lesley Putman as Secretary and Sarah Davis as Treasurer. The group also presented their annual reports to the general membership.

The UPLC’s focus and mission will remain just as strong and continue to grow in the upcoming years. The Board of Directors wishes to thank the many members, conservation easement holders, and volunteers throughout the first 10 years of service, and the UPLC hopes to have their continued support as they begin its second decade.

The Upper Peninsula Land Conservancy is a 501(c)(3) non-profit group founded to help further environmental sustainability in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan through the promotion of Email: [email protected] Website: www.CLSLC.org (look for a new website soon) Formerly: Central Lake Superior Land Conservancy conservation-based land use and ownership.
