<p> Passing the Torch Lesson 27</p><p> without burning down the kingdom</p><p>1 Chronicles 28-29; 1Kings 2:13-46 </p><p>David also said to Solomon his son, "Be strong and courageous, and do the work. Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the LORD God, my God, is with you. He will not fail you or forsake you until all the work for the service of the temple of the LORD is finished. David son of Jesse was king over all Israel. He ruled over Israel forty years — seven in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem. He died at a good old age, having enjoyed long life, wealth and honor. His son Solomon succeeded him as king.</p><p>1 Chron 28:20; 29:26-28</p><p>“David satisfied the people throughout Israel, he quieted the Philistines for all time to come, then in the midst of peace and plenty wrote many psalms of praise to Jehovah. The elderly king gathered vast stores of stone and iron, brass, and cedar for the erection of the temple of God, gave his parting charge, and closed the most successful royal career recorded in the annals of history.” G. Summons</p><p>1 Chron 28:1 David summoned all the officials of Israel to assemble at Jerusalem: the officers over the tribes, the commanders …, the officials …, and his sons, together with the palace officials, the mighty men and all the brave warriors.</p><p>B. Strategy</p><p>1 Chron 28:2 King David rose to his feet and said: "Listen to me, my brothers and my people. I had it in my heart to build a house as a place of rest for the ark of the covenant of the LORD, for the footstool of our God, and I made plans to build it</p><p>C. Submission</p><p>1 Chron 28:3 But God said to me, 'You are not to build a house for my Name, because you are a warrior and have shed blood.'</p><p>D. Sovereignty</p><p>1 Chron 28:4-7 4 Yet the LORD, the God of Israel, chose me …. He chose Judah as leader … he chose my family, and from my father's sons he was pleased to make me king over all Israel. 5 Of all my sons …. he has chosen my son Solomon to sit on the throne of the kingdom of the LORD …. 6 He said to me: 'Solomon your son is the one who will build my house and my courts, for I have chosen him… 7 I will establish his kingdom forever if he is unswerving in carrying out my commands and laws …</p><p>E. Solicitation</p><p>1 Chron 28:8 So now I charge you in the sight of all Israel and of the assembly of the LORD, and in the hearing of our God: Be careful to follow all the commands of the LORD your God, that you may possess this good land and pass it on as an inheritance to your descendants forever.</p><p>II. Know God 9a As for you, my son Solomon, know the God of your father NASB</p><p>“The question is, can we say, simply, honestly, not because we feel as evangelicals we ought to, but because it is a plain matter of fact, that we have known God, and that because we have known God the unpleasantness we have had, or the pleasantness we have not had, through being Christians does not matter to us? If we really knew God, this is what we would be saying, and if we are not saying it, that is a sign that we need to face ourselves more sharply with the difference between knowing God and merely knowing about him.” J.I. Those who truly know God desire him</p><p>Ps 63:1 O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water.</p><p>Ps 73:25 Whom have I in heaven but you? And earth has nothing I desire besides you.</p><p>2. Those who truly know God hold the highest possible view of him </p><p>Isa 45:7 I form the light and create darkness, I bring prosperity and create disaster; I, the LORD, do all these things.</p><p>Dan 4:34-35 34 His dominion is an eternal dominion; his kingdom endures from generation to generation. 35 All the peoples of the earth are regarded as nothing. He does as he pleases with the powers of heaven and the peoples of the earth. No one can hold back his hand or say to him: "What have you done?" </p><p>Ps 115:3 Our God is in heaven; he does whatever pleases him.</p><p>3. Those who truly know God find their satisfaction in him</p><p>Ps 63:5 My soul will be satisfied as with the richest of foods; with singing lips my mouth will praise you. </p><p>John 7:37 …"If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. </p><p>Heb 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you."</p><p>4. Those who truly know God are passionate for his honor</p><p>Ps 29:2 Ascribe to the LORD the glory due his name; worship the LORD in the splendor of his holiness.</p><p>Ps 33:8 Let all the earth fear the LORD; let all the people of the world revere him.</p><p>5. Those who truly know God serve him in love and gratitude</p><p>Rom 8:38-39; 12:1 38 For I am persuaded that (nothing) … shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. 1 I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that you present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable to God, which is your reasonable service.</p><p>3 B.
