Click It Or Ticket Media Outreach 2017

Click It or Ticket MEDIA OUTREACH

From the Wisconsin DOT, Division of State Patrol, Bureau of Transportation Safety

Message to participating law enforcement agencies

For a successful Click It or Ticket mobilization from May 22 to June 4, 2017, the news media must be our partners in efforts to increase safety belt use through high-visibility enforcement combined with a comprehensive public education campaign.

For statewide broadcast, the Bureau of Transportation Safety has produced Click It or Ticket TV, radio and online messages that feature former Green Bay Packer Donald Driver. This year, a new safety message will be added that highlights how unbelted motorists risk their own safety and the safety of other vehicle occupants.

Although paid advertising is a major part of the education strategy, it’s also critical that your local news media help convey the life-saving message about safety belts. As part of your media outreach efforts, you may wish to team up with your local law enforcement and traffic safety partners for a news conference or media event to kick-off Click It or Ticket. Here are media materials that you may customize for your own use:

. Sample (fill in the blank) news release announcing your participation in this year’s mobilization. To meet weekly newspaper deadlines, you may need to submit your news release in early to mid-May for publication before the mobilization starts.

. Sample (fill in the blank) letter to the editor for distribution before, with, or after the news release.

. Sample (fill in the blank) news release reporting your enforcement results as soon as possible after the mobilization concludes.

. Fact sheet/talking points for speeches, interviews and distribution to news media.

. Social media resources for posting Facebook messages and tweeting on Twitter.

The media materials also will be available on the WisDOT website at http://wisconsindot.gov/Pages/safety/enforcement/agencies/media.aspx. If you have any questions or comments, please contact your BOTS Regional Program Manager or Law Enforcement Liaison Randy Wiessinger. [email protected]

2
