INTRO. SGT JONES. PRELIMS. NOTES\ SMOKING \QUESTIONS.

INTRODUCTION

VISUAL TRAINING IS TRAINING TO OBSERVE, COUPLED WITH KNOWLEDGE OF HOW TO CONCEAL. TO OBSERVE IS TO SEE THROUGH THE ENEMY’S CONCEALMENT; TO CONCEAL IS TO DEFEAT HIS OBSERVATION. ONCE TRAINED IN BOTH, THE SOLIDER CAN LOCATE AND KILL THE ENEMY.

OBJECTIVE

THE OBJECTIVE OF MY LESSON TODAY IS TO TEACH YOU ABOUT WHY THINGS ARE SEEN. SO THAT BY THE END OF THE LESSON YOU WILL BE ABLE TO STATE THE 5 “S” AND EXPLAIN WHAT IS MEANT BY THEM.

REASON WHY.

YOU NEED TO KNOW WHY THINGS ARE SEEN SO THAT YOU CAN USE THIS TO AID YOU IN YOUR OWN CAMOUFLAGE AND CONCEALMENT.

WHY THINGS ARE SEEN 1: SHAPE –SOME THINGS CAN BE RECOGNISED INSTANTLY BY THEIR SHAPE, PARTICULARLY IF THEY CONTRAST WITH THEIR SURROUNDINGS. THREE EASILY DISTINGUISHED SHAPES WHICH REQUIRE DISGUISE FOR CONCEALMENT ARE: (1) SHAPE OF A SOLDIER'S OUTLINE; (2) SMOOTH ROUND TOP OF A SOLDIER'S HELMET. (3) HARD LINE OF A HELMET BRIM.

2:SILHOUETTE-ANY OBJECT SILHOUETTED AGAINST A CONTRASTING BACKGROUND IS CLEARLY VISIBLE. SMOOTH FLAT BACK GROUNDS SUCH AS WATER, A FIELD, OR WORST OF ALL THE SKY, SHOULD BE CONSIDERED DANGEROUS. AN OBJECT MAY ALSO BE SILHOUETTED IF IT AGAINST THE BACKGROUND OF ANOTHER COLOUR. FOR CONCEALMENT CHOOSE AN UNEVEN BACKGROUND SUCH AS A HEDGE, BUSH, TREES OR BROKEN GROUND. 3: SURFACE-IF AN OBJECT HAS A SURFACE THAT CONTRASTS WITH ITS SURROUNDINGS IT IS CLEARLY VISIBLE. THE SURFACE OF A COMBAT HELMET AND WHITE SKIN CONTRASTS VIOLENTLY WITH MOST BACKGROUNDS AND NEED TO BE DISGUISED TO ASSIST CONCEALMENT.

4:SHADOW- IN SUN LIGHT, AN OBJECT CASTS A SHADOW, WHICH GIVES AWAY ITS PRESENCE. FOR CONCEALMENT, KEEP IN THE SHADE IF POSSIBLE. THE SHADE AFFORDS COVER AND THERE IS NO “TELL-TALE” SHADOWS. REMEMBER AS THE SUN MOVES, SO DO THE SHADOWS,

4: SPACING- NATURAL OBJECTS ARE NEVER REGULARLY SPACED. REGULAR SPACING MEANS MAN MADE OBJECTS. FOR CONCEALMENT AVOID REGULAR SPACING.

5: MOVEMENT-THE EYE IS ATTRACTED TO MOVEMENT, ESPECIALLY SUDDEN MOVEMENT FOR CONCEALMENT, MOVEMENT HAS TO BE SLOW AND CAUTIOUS. ANY QUESTIONS ON THE WHOLE OF THE LESSON. NOTES AWAY.

QUESTIONS: QU: WHAT DOES THE “M” STAND FOR. AN: MOVEMENT. QU: WHAT ARE THE 5 “S” AN: SHAPE, SILHOUETTE, SURFACE, SHADOW, and SPACING. QU: EXPLAIN ABOUT SPACING. AN: NATURAL OBJECTS ARE NEVER REGULARLY SPACED

PACK AWAY KIT.

LOOK FORWARD. TO NEXT LESSON WHICH IS PERSONNEL CAMOUFLAGE AND CONCEALMENT.
