Comic Strip Scale Drawing Project

Comic Strip Scale Drawing Project

Comic Strip Scale Drawing Project Name: ______

Due Date: ______Four points will be deducted for every day late. A weekend counts as 3 days late!

Goals: The goal of this project is to take a small picture and enlarge it so that the two pictures are accurate scale drawings of each other. Every part of these pictures should be proportionate in size and shape. This project will allow you to become familiar with the use of a ruler.

Proportional Scaling is when both the width and the length of an object are reduced or enlarged according to the same ratio. This can easily be done with the assistance of a computer system or a copy machine with reduction/enlargement capabilities. In this project, students will be scaling by hand through use of graph paper.

Your art work will be displayed in the classroom and your classmates will vote for “best of...” in various categories for small prizes. Please put forth your best effort and make your drawing neat.

Project Preparation: Homework ( ______). Find a window in a comic strip that you would like to re-create.

In Class Time: Day 1 ( ______). Draw a rectangle around the picture that has dimensions evenly divisible by ¼ inch. (Ex: a comic that is 1 inch by 1.5 inches would work nicely. A comic that is 15/16 inches by 7/8 inches would not work because each measurement is not evenly divisible by ¼)

 Grid the comic window into (¼ inch) blocks. Use a ruler and do this carefully.

Day 2 ( ______). Draw a grid (that matches the dimensions of your comic grid) lightly on the graph paper using (1 inch) blocks. Please use this rule: Every four blocks on the graph paper is equal to 1 inch. If you need multiple pieces of graph paper to fit your dimensions, use a piece of oak tag, and tape down the corners of the graph paper. [NOTE: Comics borrowed from me will need multiple pieces of graph paper.]

Remaining Days: 1) Transfer the image one block at a time until the sketch is complete.

2) Add color to your picture using colored pencils. DO NOT erase the lines on your picture, even the lines inside (where you are coloring). This will make the project easier for me to grade. Materials: Pencil, colored pencils, ruler, piece of 8.5x11 graph paper, picture (from the provided options or your own – please get approval before starting if you choose to use your own picture).

Submitting your project: Please print your name ON THE BACK of your picture, along with your Block and the date.

Rubric:

Neatness (12) - Reasonable attempt at drawing the picture neatly _____ / 5 - No visible eraser marks _____ / 1 - Colored neatly in COLORED PENCIL _____ / 5 - Paper is not wrinkled or folded _____ / 1

Accuracy (16) - Used correct scale _____ / 2 - Picture proportions are accurate _____ / 8 - Colors are accurate _____ / 3 - Accurate/Neat ¼ inch grid on comic _____ / 3

Requirements (2) - Included correct scale on the drawing (1 inch = ¼inch) _____ / 1 - Included name on the drawing _____ / 1

Level of Difficulty (5) _____ / 5

Class time (5) - Used provided in class time _____ / 5

Late Penalty ( ___ days late  4 points) _____

Total _____ / 40 x 2 = 80 point Quiz Grade
