If a student sits for an assessment they will receive a detailed report of their work. Examination students receive a mark and grading. The teacher decides whether the child would benefit most from sitting an assessment or an exam. CECCHETTI CONVENTION The annual Cecchetti Convention is held in Melbourne in May each year. This is an important event and allows the ballet student to experience other teacher and dance with students from all over Victoria. This is a useful in helping our teachers decide the readiness of students for exams. There is also opportunity for students to participate in Cecchetti Victoria events in Melbourne including Encouragement Awards, Scholars and Boys Classes. CLASS DESCRIPTIONS Ballet Mummy and Me The class is aimed at 2 to 3 year olds and allows them to discover the joy of dance with either a parent or other adult. Dance is a great introduction to being active and physical exercise. It also helps develop key skills, such as coordination, balance, flexibility, strength, stamina, discipline and even memory. Being active in this way also helps boost a child’s self-esteem, make them feel good about their own abilities and increase their self-confidence. Creative Dance Play- 3-4 year old 3 & 4 year olds discover the world of dance. They learn about the space around them, and how they relate to it. Creative movement focuses on developing co-ordination, rhythm, musicality, balance and mime. Pre-Primary (School age) to Advanced Ballet (Cecchetti Syllabus) Learn the fundamentals of all dance styles. Traditional classical barre and centre combinations. Our Ballet students work to achieve grace, elegance, poise and character. Technique develops proper body alignment and the correct training of muscle groups. Classes incorporate the required discipline, but stress enjoyment and performing. Pointe Preparation Class This class is designed for classical students preparing for pointe class. Pointe Class This is for well-trained Ballet students with a minimum age of 12 years. All students wishing to commence Ballet on pointe require an assessment by a Qualified Physiotherapist. Junior/Senior Open Open ballet class is a non-syllabus class in which dance steps are put together in changing and challenging combinations. It requires strong ballet technique and we recommend students attend at least one syllabus class per week before undertaking an Open class. Open class is offered free to all students that attend two syllabus ballet classes per week. Senior Open includes Grades 5, 6 and Intermediate. Junior Open includes Grade 3 & 4.

Adult Ballet Class Provides a safe and positive dance class for adults, ranging from complete beginners, to those who have extensive dance experience.

Contemporary This class is designed for students to help with flexibility and strength. Contemporary dance is not a specific technique, but a collection of methods developed from modern and post-modern dance incorporating strong and often angular body and arm lines. It is an enjoyable and quite unique dance style and students are encouraged to try it out. It incorporates neo classical and modern movements. Students must be in Year 7 or above. Jazz and Tap Jazz Classes Jazz dance encompasses a wide variety of dance styles and can take many different forms using a broad range of music. Within a jazz class particular attention is paid to establishing solid dance technique. A typical jazz class begins with a warm up that is focused on stretching and isolating different body parts. Then the class starts learning separate moves like turns, jumps, leaps and pirouettes. A short, step-by-step routine is taught accompanied by popular music (i.e. Top 40, Pop or RnB). The class ends with a short cool-down and stretching. Tap Dance Tap is a style of dance distinguished by percussive footwork that marks out precise rhythmic patterns on the floor. Tap is a lot of fun and a great aerobic dance style. The sound is created from plates attached to both the ball and heel of a dancer’s shoes. Tap has been made famous by Gene Kelly, Fred Astaire and our own Australian Tap Dogs. Which class is right for my child? Beginner Jazz/Tap Approximately 5-6 year olds* Junior Approximately 7-9 year olds* Intermediate Approximately 10-12 year olds* Senior From 13 years* *The appropriate class will depend on the child’s maturity and dance experience. Miss Lizzy will advise you of the right class for your child.

2014 Dance Term Dates

Saturday classes: Term 1 Feb: 1, 8, 15, 22 March: 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, April 5 Term 2 April 26, May: 3, 10, 17, 24, 31 June: 7, 14, 21, 28 Term 3 July: 19, 26, August: 2, 9, 16, 23, 30 September: 6, 13, 20 Term 4 October: 4, 11, 18, 25, November: 1, 8, 15, 22

Monday classes: Term 1 Feb: 3, 10, 17, 24, March 3, 10*, 17, 24, 31 Term 2 April: 21, 28, May: 5, 12, 19, 26, June: 2, 9*, 16, 23 Term 3 July: 14, 21, 28, August: 4, 11, 18, 25, Sept: 1, 8, 15 Term 4 October: 6, 13, 20, 27, November: 3*, 10, 17, 24 *No Miss Rowena classes.

Tuesday classes: Term 1 Feb: 4, 11, 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18, 25, April 1 Term 2 April: 22, 29, May: 6, 13, 20, 27, June: 3, 10, 17, 24 Term 3 July: 15, 22, 29, August: 5, 12, 19, 26, Sept: 2, 9, 16 Term 4 October: 7, 14, 21, 28, November: 4*, 11, 18, 25 *No Miss Rowena or Miss Lizzy classes.

Wednesday classes: Term 1 Feb: 5, 12, 19, 26, March 5, 12, 19, 26, April 2 Term 2 April: 23, 30, May: 7, 14, 21, 28, June: 4, 11, 18, 25 Term 3 July: 16, 23, 30, August: 6, 13, 20, 27, Sept: 3, 10, 17 Term 4 October: 8, 15, 22, 29, November: 5, 12, 19, 26

Thursday classes: Term 1 Feb: 6, 13, 20, 27, March 6, 13, 20, 27, April 3 Term 2 April: 24, May: 1, 8, 15, 22, 29, June: 5, 12, 19, 26, Term 3 July: 17, 24, 31, August: 7, 14, 21, 28, Sept: 4, 11, 18 Term 4 October: 9, 16, 23, 30, November: 6, 13, 20, 27

Other Important Dates:

12 July* Choreography Afternoon and AGM, Cowes Cultural Centre 8, 9, 10 July* Winter School 29 November Dress Rehearsal- Newhaven College Auditorium 2, 3, 5 December Concert Rehearsals- Wonthaggi Arts Centre 6 December Annual Concert - Wonthaggi Arts Centre *Subject to change
