PURPOSE AND HISTORY 4 5 In 1976, the Associated Students, University of California, Davis (ASUCD), established Classical 6 Notes for the purpose of providing lecture notes to UC Davis undergraduate students as additional 7 study aids. Through this service, Classical Notes provides lecture notes to students and instructors as 8 study and teaching aids. This service also offers many opportunities for student employment. 9 Concurrently, in the fall of 1976, Rabbit Reproductions was established by the ASUCD to provide low- 10 cost printing for Classical Notes. Additional business was needed in order to cover the cost of 11 providing the service, so the service was offered to ASUCD units and students. It was also offered to 12 the general public at a higher rate. The only advertising of the service at that time was in the Student 13 Viewpoint. The business generated by the general public grew so large that eventually it had to be 14 discontinued. 15 In October 1978, Rabbit Reproductions leased a new duplicating machine, the Xerox 9400, 16 which replaced the original Xerox 9200. One of the new added features of the Xerox 9400 is its ability 17 to do two-sided copying faster and more efficiently than the old machine. 18 However, in the fall of 1984, both Classical Notes and Rabbit Reproductions ceased to exist as two 19 separate ASUCD entities and merged into one consolidated unit under the management of one full- 20 time Director. This new unit also terminated its leasing of the 9400 Xerox machine in favor of 21 purchasing a computerized "state-of-the-art" 9900 Xerox copier with numerous technical, artistic and 22 time-saving features. Shortly after the merger, we conducted a "logo and name" change contest for 23 our unit which was to provide us with a commonly shared name; however, after a great deal of 24 deliberation, it was decided that Classical Notes would maintain its former identity, but Rabbit 25 Reproductions ceased to exist and was reincarnated as Paperworks. 26 Within one year, Classical Notes/Paperworks grew from a staff of twenty to forty-five and while the 27 merger was quite successful, an administrative decision (based on the resignation of our career 28 Director and monetary considerations) was made to restructure the unit under the leadership of four 29 student stipend positions effective 9/15/85. These positions consist of a Director, a Production 30 Manager, and two Sales Managers, one for CN-Sales and Paperworks, respectively. 31 In 1990, Paperworks changed its name to Campus Copies. In the unit there are 4 copy 32 machines, 2 high volume copiers, OCE 2600’s, and 2 medium volume Canons. Classical Notes has 33 since then opened another store called Archives, which sells old classical notes at reduced prices. 34 During the Coffee House Renovation, Campus Copies/Classical Notes (CC/CN) temporarily relocated to 35 the basement of the Memorial Union (MU), occupying space that used to belong to AS PAPERS and 36 KDVS 90.3. Following the Coffee House renovation, Campus Copies/Classical Notes returned to its 37 original spot in the Memorial Union (MU). During this time period, Archives was consolidated back into 38 Campus Copies/Classical Notes, which continues to sell old classical notes at reduced prices out of 39 their MU location. 40 Campus Copies/Classical Notes recent bought a new black and white Canon 8085 as well as a 41 new color printer Canon 5035 in order to stay competitive with off campus competition. As of 42 September 20th, 2011, color printing has been offered at Campus Copies/Classical Notes. 43 In April 2012, due to high demand for custom t-shirts, Aggie Threads separated from Campus 44 Copies/Classical Notes into its own unit. The space in the Memorial Union is still shared between them 45 and they still share some of the same equipment, including the register and credit card machine. 46 47 II. PERSONNEL 48 49 1. Also, in an effort to improve the quality of their services CC/CN hopes to purchase new Mac 175 computers. They are currently working off very old Mac and PC computers so with the purchase of 176 new computers, CC/CN will be able to be more efficient and run higher quality programs. Furthermore, 177 with the purchase of the new computers, the unit will be able to provide eco-friendly alternatives. One 178 of their eco-friendly goals is to provide all digital copies of their notes. Having digital copies will 179 facilitate sales due to CC/CN’s ability to offer reduced prices for these notes. An additional benefit to 180 all digital notes will provide faculty and students an easy way to access these notes. Campus 181 Copies/Classical Notes will continue to build partnerships with academic departments for production of 182 readers. 183 184 Finance: No Appropriation: None Vote: Majority 185</p>
