Trent Radio Studio C Project: Schedule of Equipment Estimates (page 2 of 3) with detailed descriptions.

Estimates fall into the two main classifications;

Ingest & Server - computer and ancillary equipment related to the digital archive. These are further categorised as i) the ingest (the conversion of a variety of audio and related materials to a standard and accessible digital format), and ii) the computer and ancillary equipment related to the storage and access of the digital data by means of computer server system.

B) Audio and ancillary Equipment related to the production and broadcast of sound materials

The following chart details items listed in the same order as they appear in the Schedule of Equipment Estimates

INGEST & SERVER (Trillium) totals

Ingest Stations (Trillium)

This section describes the specifications for three identical desktop computers which will be used to convert audio materials to the digital format to used for the digital archive.

AMD XP 1600CPU /w Abit KR7RaidMB/256Mb PC133RAM (3@ $2,000 EA) 6,000

This describes the make and model of the motherboard, and central processing unit (CPU) and the type and amount of random access memory. ABIT is manufacturer of, by any measure, modestly priced high quality motherboards. There are two CPU manufacturers, Intel and AMD. AMD processors are on the whole cheaper and faster than the Intel range of products, and are as stable when well matched to a good quality motherboard and memory. The speed of the CPU directly relates to the rate at which sound materials can be encoded.

These items would have been modern eight months ago

Equipped with 80GB Ultra 100HD

This relates to the size of hard disk storage (eighty gigabytes) and the hard disk's data transfer rate (100 megabytes per second) - the speed at which data can be read and written to the disk. Each Ingest computer needs to be able to store a minimum of 50GBs for audio material and the hard disk must have a fast enough data transfer rate to keep up with data being read and transferred from the CD-ROM.

Windows 2000 Operating System

This relates to the "operating system" (OS) software which runs the computer system. Windows 2000 is considered to be an advance on the Windows NT or 98 and more stable than the even more modern Windows XP software. 17" Monitor

This relates to the diagonal size of the video display screen, and having fallen in price over the last three years has superseded the previous 15" display standard.

40x CDROM

This relates to the Compact Disc Read Only Memory and show a read speed of forty times the nominal speed of a standard music CD player. The ability of the drive to successfully achieve anything near this speed is dependent upon the RAM, CPU speed and Hard Disk data transfer capabilities.

100mbs NIC

This relates to a network interface card, which provides the transfer data to and from the computer system over a local area network. It is essential in the transfer of data from the ingest machine to the server system and data transfer rating of 100 megabits per second superseded the previous 10 megabits per second about two years ago.

Keyboard, Mouse & Cables These items relate to the standard computer input and control devices.

Associated Software This would include hardware specific software to install and maintain the motherboard, cpu, CD-ROM, hard disk)

Generally vendors bundle these specific items together.

Please see Bundled Estimates # 1 Premier Computer Canada system quote $1,861.39 # 2 shopRBC system quote $1980.95

The three systems to be purchased shall meet or exceed the specification above and shall not exceed a cost of $2,000 per unit

***

Digital Audio Labs CDX-01SoundCards (3@ $299US/$485CDN EA) 1,455

This relates to the computer sound card which converts analogue audio sources from tape, cassette, phonograph &c to a digital format. A high quality analogue to digital conversion to producing a high quality sound file.

The CDX-01 was chosen as it is the least expensive of any other high quality soundcard device in its class and is sufficient to the needs of the project.

***

CalmPC Water cooled cases for same (3@ $325 EA) 975 Note: Audio Inputs Devices - see Studio C section 8,430

This relates to controlling noise in a audio studio produced by standard computer cooling systems which use fans. A water cooled case of the type above dissipates the heat produced by the computer through passive liquid convection without the use of noisy fans.

Please see Estimates # 1 C-Systems CALM-2 (CS-0203A) $225US or $325CDN # 2 shopRBC Koolance Full Tower Water Cooling Case (PC2-601B) $355

The CalmPC CALM-2 Water cooled cases were chosen and shown on the basis of price.
