Natural rights -> “life liberty pursuit of happiness” (property) Liberty = freedom rights 3. Social Contract- Gov. provides freedom + rights 4. power to rule comes from people = popular sovereignty</p><p>Independence 1783 1784 Whites-males With land Rights to vote Property</p><p>Problems: people in America don’t get to experience the ideas of the Declaration of Independence. Women- very little property rights, African Americans Slaves Indians Poor whites</p><p>1789 – US Constitution= Bill of Rights Created 1830 – Jacksonian-Democracy = Adult white males Universal Manhood Suffrage 1863 – Civil War Ends 13th – No slavery = Equality 14th – Equal Protection of Law 15th – Voting Rights 1920 – 19th Amendment = Women right to vote 1954 – Brown vs. Board of Education Illegal to discriminate in schools Illegal to separate the races = Equality 1965 – Civil Rights Act aka Voting Rights Act = EQUALITY 1972 – Voting Age 26th Amendment – 18 becomes voting age Stepping Stones to LERPS (Liberty, Equality, Rights, and Popular Sovereignty) Choose one of the following entries: Create a small poster to be attached to a large display. Entries must include: 1. Large lettering for the “Big Idea” 2. Short bulleted description of the item, what it is how it relates to LERPS- (make this clear and easy to see) 3. Visuals- images, diagrams, maps, pictures… that help kids remember 4.
