Two of the more common causes are incorrect belt tension and misalignment. On vehicles without automatic tensioners, have them recheck belt tension after installing a new belt. Allowing the system to run for a while will seat the new belt, after which readjustment is required. Let them know that a loose belt will slip and fail prematurely. Explain that some alternators are shimmed fore and aft in their mounting brackets. Tell them to be sure to align the alternator-driven pulley with the engine drive pulley. Inform them that an alternator that is not properly shimmed or aligned will cause premature belt wear, as well as a possible squeaking noise while the engine is running. Instruct students that many belt systems use a spring-loaded tensioner that needs to be checked for the correct spring tension with a large wrench or with a socket and a long ratchet.
