Easy ideas and lessons for hands on approach for middle and high school students. Incorporate casting techniques, fish identification, knot tying, and a culminating fish fry into your unit. Backyard Bass provide educational lead up activities that excite and challenge the students. Materials will also be presented from the Department of Natural Resources "Learn to fish" program. Join in on the angling craze. He provides students with a variety of materials to walk away with. -state rules and regulations books -fish rulers -knot tying wallet cards -fish identification flyers</p><p>Day 4 – Casting Practice *OVERHEAD, SIDEARM, UNDERHAND  In gym using Backyard Bass  Tape fish pictures to back of fish and have students practice measuring and identifying fish - Is it legal? -see attached sample lesson plan</p><p>Day 5 – 8  Live fishing at local lake, stream, dams  (if your school does not have water access you may continue to fish with backyard bass and set up a tournament)</p><p>Day 9 *Rain Date – Angling WEB search -see attachment </p><p>Day 10 Written Test Skills test – casting and knot tying -see attached test</p><p>Day 11 Culminating Fish Fry -students learn to fillet -fish anatomy -learn how to prepare, batter fry, and cook fish -sample taste</p><p>The beginning of the lesson is teacher directed. The teacher will demonstrate and the students will practice. Students will then partner check casting skill techniques and knot tying techniques.</p><p>Before going out on the water – Basic Water Safety techniques are taught (REACH, THROW, ROW, GO )</p><p>We teach a canoeing and kayaking unit before the angling unit so we incorporate our boating in with our angling and allow students to fish out of the boats.</p><p>Equipment needed to get started: -1 rod/reel per student or 1 for every two students -bobbers, hooks, sinkers to outfit number of poles -bait (live – worms, minnows, grubs) (artificial – lures, wax worms) -backyard bass -fish identification pictures -rope and eyebolts</p><p>See the attached sheets for lesson plan, tournament form, Web search, written test. Angling Lesson Fishing Unit</p><p>Student Objectives TSWBAT learn the basic technique of casting overhand, side arm, and flick TSWBAT gain casting skills through repetition in class TSWBAT use fish identification knowledge to identify and score fish in a mock tournament</p><p>LX1 2 minutes Introduction to pole</p><p>LX2 5 minutes Demonstrate casting techniques</p><p>LX3 14 minutes Students practice casting in open gym</p><p>LX4 20 minutes Mock Fishing Tournament . Back yard bass are placed throughout the gym with different fish pasted on the bottom . The students will try to hook a fish and reel it in . Once the fish are reeled in, the students must identify the type of fish, measure, weigh, and record their catch (fish must be identified correctly to count) . The team with the most weight of fish wins the tournament</p><p>Casting Steps Closed Face (Spin Cast Reel) 1) Face the target area with body at slight angle, aim rod, tip to target 2) Press and hold down, release button 3) Bend arms at elbow, raise your hand with the rod until it almost reaches eyelevel 4) When the rod is almost straight up and down, it will be bent back by the weight of the plug 5) As the rod bends, move your forearm forward with a slight wrist movement 6) Sweep the rod forward causing the rod to bend with the motion 7) As the rod moves in front of you reaching eye level, (about the 10 O’clock position) release your thumb from the button 8) The bend in the rod casts out the bait</p><p>Open Faced 1) Trap the line against the rod grip and your index finger 2) Holding the line, open the bail 3) Get ready to cast 4) Swing the rod in a smooth arc and release the line by printing your finger at the target Jr. Angler / Web Search</p><p>Answer the following questions using either the Junior Angler book or the World Wide Web.
