K.G.4 Assessment Task

MCCK.G.4 Analyze and compare two- and three-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations, using informal language to describe their similarities, differences, parts (e.g., number of sides and vertices/“corners”) and other attributes (e.g., having sides of equal length).

Directions: 1. Provide the student with a copy of shapes that have been sorted by their attributes. 2. Ask the student to identify how the shapes in each box are similar and how they are different.

Considerations:

 Listen to the type of observations students make about the shapes. For example, do they say rectangle or shapes with four sides? Are they able to identify shapes by the correct name?  Are students aware that when an objects’ orientation is changed, it is still the same shape? Are students aware that when the two shapes have the same name even if their size is different?
