<p> Volume 59, No. 2 Spring 2009</p><p>Cal State San Bernardino Student, Profs Win Convention Research Award</p><p>“Using Academic Interventions to Improve Social, Emotional and Behavioral Outcomes,” by Heather Wheeler, was awarded the Michael Goodman Memorial Research Award at the 60th Annual CASP Convention held last month in Riverside.</p><p>Ms. Wheeler, a graduate intern, teamed with Dr. R. Brett Nelson, Diana L. Nelson and Dr. Tony Wu on her winning paper. She is completing her degree at California State University, San Bernardino where Dr. Nelson is her professor. Ms. Nelson is employed by the Riverside Unified School District, and Dr. Wu is affiliated with the Los Angeles Child Guidance Clinic.</p><p>The winning paper will highlight the effectiveness of using academic strategies with students who have social-emotional and behavioral needs. Research will be reviewed relative to the impact of an academic focus on emotionally challenged students along with a case study. The paper includes ways to incorporate academic strategies with students who have behavior problems.</p><p>The Goodman award is presented to the best paper or poster proposal presented at the annual CASP Convention. The application is explained in the Call for Presenters; winners receive a cash award. Information on next year’s application will be included in the Convention 2010 Call for Presenters, which will be available on the CASP web site in the coming months.</p><p>CASP Research Committee Chair Brian Leung, Ph.D., with Goodman Award Winner Heather Wheeler.</p>
