The shift toward 21st Century Skills, the CCSS and the NGSS has occurred because of pressing global environmental and economic issues. 2. STEM has become critically important as content areas in which all students must achieve. 3. Equity issues have brought focus on reaching and teaching diverse populations through culturally relevant pedagogy. 4. Lesson Design Study (LDS) has been around for a long while and is now being reintroduced as a means for teachers to track their own growth as effective professional educators. 5. The California CSTPs provide teachers with a comprehensive set of standards on which they can establish goals for equitable student success. 6. The action research aspect of LDS specifically refers to a disciplined inquiry by educators that informs and changes their practice in the future. 7. LDS includes a focus question that addresses standards; formative assessments; depth of knowledge levels; the 4Cs; modes of student communication; technology and universal design. 8. Teachers work best on problems they have identified for themselves. 9. LDS engages teachers in collegial communication, collaboration, critical thinking and creativity. Processes that they can the transfer into their professional practice. 10. Teachers look for ways to improve instruction and increase student achievement. 11. In LDS, teachers work with colleagues to improve their professional practice. 12. Some of the key constraints underrepresented minority students face in learning success are: a) Health and Safety b) Engagement at home, school, community; c) Support at home, school, community; d) Challenge at home, school, community.</p>
