Honors Biology- Experimental Design

Go home, relax, watch some TV, and say you are doing your homework. Pay attention to the commercials and select an advertisement that claims to do something. In narrative form, tell me about the commercial by addressing the following points:

Describe the commercial in appearance and plot. What does the commercial claim? What evidence does the commercial provide to support their claim? Is their evidence valid and substantiated? Can their claim by reasonably measured and tested?

Now stop relaxing and start to think in a scientific manner. What would you do if you really wanted to test what the commercial claims? In narrative form, tell me about the experiment you would conduct to determine if the commercial is making a valid assertion. Your description should be sure to address the following points:

Do you have an appropriate hypothesis? Have you thought about using a control? Have you used replicates? Have you established clear variables to test? What are your treatments and are they appropriate? Is your testing criteria equal among all variables?

Be sure to complete this assignment on a separate sheet of paper. The top right corner of your paper should include your name, date, and section of Honors Biology that you are in. You do not need to type your responses, but they must be neatly submitted. All responses must be in full sentences. Any claims must be substantiated with evidence. Just as in any math class you are asked to show your work for full credit, I want to see your mental work. In other words, tell me why you think what you do. Always provide thoughtful and thorough answers. These requirements will apply to every assignment you will submit for the rest of the year (and beyond…).
