Georgetown Solid Waste Management Committee

GEORGETOWN SOLID WASTE MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE Minutes: June 8, 2017

PRESENT: Karren Cowing, Alison Freeman, Ole Jaeger, Sharon Trabona, Jim Coombs, Transfer Station manager, and Geoff Birdsall, Selectman representative.

MINUTES: Ole Jaeger moved and Sharon Trabona seconded acceptance of the May 11, 2017 minutes, as written. The minutes were unanimously accepted.

FISCAL: The Committee received an invoice from e-waste for $21.54 for fluorescent bulbs.

As of the end of May, $74,730.10 has been expended for hauling and tipping.

Jim Coombs requested a $40.00 reimbursement for the use of his Tracfone when using it for Transfer Station (TS) business. He submitted a receipt for the purchase of the phone card. Ole moved and Sharon seconded to reimburse for the purchase of a Tracfone card minutes. The motion was passed unanimously.

Ole noted that the Universal Waste (UW) line item is overspent. Alison postulated that the Town is being charged for some items that were collected without charge previously. Jim also noted that the price of disposal of fluorescent bulbs has risen and there have been more pickups.

OPERATIONS: After the compactor was registering as full, Valley Company examined the compactor. The service person found that an electrical contact needed replacing. This has been repaired and it is working appropriately.

There was a metals pickup.

Nathan Rubin is not available to work at the Transfer Station this summer. Currently, there are 3 employees (although Jim Brown is still on medical leave, but due to return soon). At the present, there is no substitutes. Volunteers have been very helpful. Advertising in the paper has not previously led to hiring anybody so the Committee decided not to post the position. If anyone becomes aware of someone who might be interested in the position, please let Jim and Selectmen know.

OTHER: Sharon volunteered to check vehicles for TS stickers at the TS. Jim said his staff had discussed having one of them check for stickers at the entrance of the TS, but Jim does not have the staff to provide this service. The Committee was supportive of Sharon volunteering for this task. Geoff Reuse, and reduce, recycle.

Remember recycling and discarding less saves tax dollars. Birdsall thought that the Town’s insurance covers her volunteering for this task. After some discussion, the Committee thought Sharon collecting data on how many vehicles enter the TS without stickers was a good idea. She will remind them the stickers are required.

Alison Freeman will man the Volunteer Fair as the representative of the Solid Waste Management Committee. She will have TS brochures and a display reminding residents that a sticker is required.

NEXT MEETING: The next regularly scheduled meeting will be held on Thursday, July 13, 2017 at 7:00 PM.

Respectfully submitted, Karren Cowing Cc: Solid Waste Management Committee members, Selectmen, Town Office
