Science Coverage UKS2 Y5 Strands

Science Year 5 Biology: Living things and their habitats

Study the life cycles of mammals, amphibians, insects & birds, including some unusual examples like egg-laying mammals & marsupials. Compare complete & incomplete metamorphosis. Find out about well-known naturalists & animal behaviourists. Propagate plants from different parts of the parent plant. Descriptions of Sessions

Recap on life cycles of flowering plants and plant some seeds to germinate & grow during the strand. Explain that plants can also reproduce asexually. Session A Chn plant bulbs, corms, tubers and cuttings of roots, stems & leaves to see Flowering plants if they can propagate new plants.

Study the life cycles of some non-flowering plants, e.g. algae, mosses, Session B liverworts, ferns & gymnosperms, i.e. conifers, and compare them to Non-flowering plants flowering plants. Chn make careful observational drawings of representative plants, enlarging some details. Discuss the life cycle of humans and compare and contrast with those of Session C other mammals, e.g. kangaroos & dogs. Identify features of mammals. Mammals Explain that there are two unusual mammals that lay eggs. Watch videos of the live birth of humans & other mammals. The main difference in the life cycles of mammals & birds is that birds lay Session D eggs. Recap on the structure of eggs (looked at in Year 2). Explain that Birds migration is part of the life cycle of many birds. Incubate some eggs & watch the chicks hatch. Draw a bird life cycle. Remind chn of the life cycles of butterflies & frogs & look at examples of Session E other insect & amphibian life cycles. Understand differences between Amphibians and insects complete & incomplete metamorphosis. Compare with mammal & bird life cycles. Have an origami frog jumping championship! Discuss the work that naturalists and animal behaviourists carry out & why Session F it is important. Watch video clips of some of these scientists at work. Sit Scientists quietly in the school grounds to observe living things. Research & write a biography of a well-known scientist. Summarise the findings of the Strand & look at some unusual plants & Session G animals from elsewhere in the world, including other egg-laying animals. Plant propagation Chn complete their observations of flowering plants, plant propagation enquiries and egg & frog spawn hatching. Write reports of their findings.

© Hamilton Trust 2014 Y5 - Science Science Strands UKS2

Year 5 Year 6 Living things and their habitats Biology Living things and their habitats Biology Animals, including humans Biology Animals, including humans Biology Evolution and inheritance Biology Properties and changes of materials Chemistry Earth and space Physics Light Physics Forces Physics Electricity Physics

© Hamilton Trust 2014 Y5 - Science Hamilton Trust

Science Year 5

Biology Strand

Living things and their habitats

© Hamilton Trust 2014 Y5 - Science
