Ohio NExT Abstracts, Spring 2010

Communicating Mathematics Ivars Peterson, MAA Director of Publications and Communications

The importance of communicating mathematics clearly and effectively is evident in the many ways in which mathematicians must write, whether to produce technical reports, expository articles, book reviews, essays, referee's reports, grant proposals, research papers, evaluations, or slides for oral presentations. With a focus on exposition, this presentation offers tips for improving writing and presentation skills, from grammar and usage to organization and manuscript or slide preparation.

Adopting a Group: A Writing Assignment in Abstract Algebra I Thomas Wakefield, Youngstown State University

To satisfy the "writing-intensive" requirement of Abstract Algebra I at Youngstown State, a "group" project first developed by Ralph Czerwinski and adapted by Annalisa Crannell and Janice Sklensky was assigned to the class during Fall semester 2009. In this presentation, we will discuss the details concerning the adopted groups project and the results of the assignment.
