Big Bend Community College is designated a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) and serves approximately 5,000 students annually, with an annualized FTE of approximately 2,100, in a 4,600-square-mile service district including 15 communities in Grant and Adams Counties and the Odessa School District in Lincoln County with on-site and online instruction. </p><p>POSITION SUMMARY: The Financial Aid Advisor works closely with the Director of Financial Aid to administer all forms of student aid, to include federal, state, and BBCC financial aid programs. This position will coordinate communication efforts to prospective and continuing students and to residents of the service district both on and off campus. This position works closely with all members of the financial aid team as well as the departments of Admission/Registration and the Business Office.</p><p>The Financial Aid Advisor reports to the Director of Financial Aid and acts as the Director in the absence of the Director of Financial Aid. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Primary essential duties and responsibilities include but will not be limited to the following:  Advises students, parents and others in regard to all aspects of financial aid programs offered, including application procedures, FAFSA/WASFA completion, eligibility requirements and responsibilities associated with the acceptance of aid.  Understands and applies knowledge of federal and state financial aid regulations as well as BBCC financial aid policies and procedures. Independently exercises professional judgment concerning individual student circumstances to analyze, calculate aid eligibility and award financial aid.  Manages all aspects of State Need Grant, College Bound, and other state grant programs. Reviews regulations and recommends policy and procedure changes to maintain compliance. Monitors and reconciles expenditures. Completes and submits the State Need Grant Interim Report. Responsible for downloading files from the Washington Achievement Council to check eligibility for College Bound and State Need Grant status.  Conducts student interviews to resolve data discrepancies, explains program requirements and services available. Refers students to additional college and community support services.  Evaluates appeals for reinstatement of aid due to extraordinary circumstances. Makes the final decision on appeals for reinstatement. Prepares reports on the status of the program. Ensures database is current.  Coordinates outside scholarship program to include processing and reconciling scholarship expenditures. Develops and maintains scholarship database. Assists students with scholarship questions.  Helps students with understanding and setup of the HigherOne card. Reviews reports and works with the Business Office to resolve any issues related to HigherOne processes.  Works with the director on the development and implementation of BBCC financial aid policies and procedures.  Coordinates the communication efforts of the Financial Aid Office to students, parents, and the community. Prepares and presents financial aid information at events on and off campus. Works closely with BBCC webmaster to release pertinent information to social media outlets.  Develops and maintains positive and effective working relationships with staff, students, parents, faculty, and external contacts.  Represents the college at professional and community organizations. Participates in related professional conferences and in service activities. Participates in college activities and serves on committees.  Ensures that additional accountabilities, as may be required, be handled in a manner necessary to meet the standards of the institution.</p><p>OTHER WORK RESPONSIBILITIES:  Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.  Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.  Ensures compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.  Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college’s values.  Perform additional duties and responsibilities as may be required. </p><p>COMPETENCIES:  Possesses a strong desire to build and maintain positive relationships with colleagues and students.  Employs effective critical thinking skills; seeks resources for direction when necessary. Practices within legal and ethical guidelines.  Possesses demonstrated leadership experience and the ability to take initiative.  Comfortable with using technology to reach students and increase efficiency.  Communicates effectively orally and in writing, including the ability to engage in one-on-one settings and in public forums.  Exercises effective problem-solving abilities, especially in cases requiring quick action and resolution.</p><p>MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:  Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited institution.  Ability to use computers and spreadsheets, database and word processing software such as Excel, Access, Word, PowerPoint, and Outlook.  Excellent customer services skills.  Ability to work independently as well as be a part of a team of dynamic professionals.  Ability to effectively present information in large or small group settings. Ability to respond to questions from students, parents, or the general public. Ability to create visual aids to enhance presentations.  Demonstrated cultural competency skills and commitment to working collaboratively and cooperatively in a diverse, multicultural environment. </p><p>DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:  Two years’ experience working in higher education, including one year related to student financial aid.  Financial aid experience in the Washington State Community and Technical College System.  Previous experience with SBCTC applications including FAM, Student Management System (SMS) and Financial Management System (FMS) cashiering software; U.S. Department of Education web based software, including EDExpress; FAAccess; National Student Loan Data System software; Common Origination and Disbursement and EdConnect. Understanding of the HigherOne Refund process.  Working knowledge of social media outlets such as Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, and Instagram.  Knowledge of Family Education Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).  Demonstrated ability to utilize sound judgement and make independent decisions.
