<p> Intermediate Algebra 1-3 Applications to Geometry and Literal Equations </p><p>Applications Involving Geometry: </p><p> Perimeter – sum of all the sides of the shape.  Complementary angles – a pair of angles whose sum is 90 degrees.  Supplementary angles – a pair of angles whose sum is 180 degrees.  Triangle – sum of the angles of a triangle is 180 degrees.</p><p>Examples: 1.) The length of a rectangular corral is 2 ft. more than 3 times the width. The corral is situated such that one of its shorter sides is adjacent to a barn and does not require fencing. If the total amount of fencing is 774 ft., then find the dimensions of the corral.</p><p>2.) Two angles are complementary. One angle measures 10°less than 4 times the other angle. Find the measure of each angle.</p><p>Literal Equations: are equations that contain several variables. A formula is a literal equation with a specific application.  Equations with several variables (letters) are called literal equations. </p><p> Solve the equation for one of the variables. The letters that do not represent your desired variable move to the other side of the equal sign so that the one variable you are solving for stands alone.</p><p> Even though there are more letters in these equations, the methods used to solve these equations are the same as the methods you use to solve all equations. Example: ; solve for l Applying a Literal Equation: </p><p>Example: 1.) Buckingham Fountain is on of Chicago’s most familiar landmarks. With 133 jets spraying a total of 14,000 gal of water per minute. Buckingham Fountain is one of the world’s largest fountains. The circumference of the fountain is approximately 880 ft. a. The circumference of a circle is given by. Solve the equation for r. b. Use the equation from part (1) to find the radius and diameter of the fountain. Use π key and round to the nearest foot.</p><p>Practice: 1.) The formula to compute the surface area, S, of a sphere is given by a. Solve the equation for π. b. A sphere has a surface area of 113 and a radius of 3 in. Use the formula found in part (a) to approximate π. Round to two decimal places.</p><p>2.) The length of Karen’s living room is 2 ft. longer than the width. The perimeter is 80 ft. Find the length and width.</p><p>5.)
