Operation: Periodic Table

Operation: Periodic Table

Mission Directive:

Part A: You have been given data on 24 mystery elements. Your team’s mission is to cut out and arrange these elements in a table according to their chemical and physical properties.

1. Group the mystery elements into 5 groups. Get your groups checked by Mrs. C before moving on.

Hint: 4 groups have 5 elements. 1 group has 4 elements. (There is no H or O)

2. Within each group, arrange the mystery elements from top to bottom within their group (as elements are arranged on the actual periodic table). Get your ordering checked by Mrs. C before moving on.

Hint: X is above Y

3. Arrange the groups in order from left to right across the periodic table.

Part B: Once you have finalized the layout of your table, glue it to a piece of poster paper.

Part C: In the space below, write a description of how your table is organized.

______

Activity modified from http://spraguehs.com/staff/wanak_jeremy/documents/Operation%20periodic%20table.pdf A B C D Black crystalline Colorless gas Black crystalline Silver-white, soft solid Melting point = solid metallic solid Melting point = -233C Melting point = Melting point = 3652C Boiling point = 114C 186C Boiling point = -188C Boiling point = Boiling point = 4200C Ionization energy = 184C 1336C Ionization energy = 1682 kJ/mol Ionization energy = Ionization energy = 1088 kJ/mol Hydride = BH 1031 kJ/mol 519 kJ/mol Hydride = AH4 Oxide = B2O Hydride = CH Hydride = DH Oxide = AO2, AO Chloride = BCl Oxide = C2O Oxide = D2O Chloride = ACl4 Chloride = CCl Chloride = DCl

E F G I Colorless gas Silver-white, soft Colorless gas Gray crystalline solid Melting point = metallic solid Melting point = Melting point = -272C Melting point = 28C -112C 1420C Boiling point = Boiling point = Boiling point = Boiling point = -268C 670C -107C 2355C Ionization energy = Ionization energy = Ionization energy = Ionization energy = 2372 kJ/mol 375 kJ/mol 1170 kJ/mol 787 kJ/mol Hydride = none Hydride = FH Hydride = none Hydride = IH4 Oxide = none Oxide = F2O Oxide = GO2 Oxide = IO2 Chloride = none Chloride = FCl (unstable) Chloride = ICl4 Chloride = GCl4 (unstable)

J K L M Silver-white, soft Colorless gas Silver-gray, soft Silver, soft metallic metallic solid Melting point = metallic solid solid Melting point = -249C Melting point = Melting point = 62C 842C Boiling point = 1280C Boiling point = Boiling point = -246C Boiling point = 760C 1240C Ionization energy = 2970C Ionization energy = Ionization energy = 2080 kJ/mol Ionization energy = 418 kJ/mol 590 kJ/mol Hydride = none 898 kJ/mol Hydride = MH Hydride = JH2 Oxide = none Hydride = LH2 Oxide = M2O Oxide = JO Chloride = none Oxide = LO Chloride = MCl Chloride = JCl2 Chloride = LCl2

Activity modified from http://spraguehs.com/staff/wanak_jeremy/documents/Operation%20periodic%20table.pdf N P Q R Silver, pale yellow Colorless gas Gray-white metallic Red-orange solid metallic solid Melting point = solid Melting point = Melting point = -157C Melting point = -7.2C 774C Boiling point = 958C Boiling point = 59C Boiling point = -153C Boiling point = Ionization energy = 1140C Ionization energy = 2700C 1148 kJ/mol Ionization energy = 1346 kJ/mol Ionization energy = Hydride = RH 551 kJ/mol Hydride = none 780 kJ/mol Oxide = R2O Hydride = NH2 Oxide = PO2 Hydride = QH2 Chloride = RCl Oxide = NO (unstable) Oxide = QO2, QO Chloride = NCl2 Chloride = PCl4 Chloride = QCl2, QCl4 (unstable)

S T U V Colorless gas Silver-white metallic Silver-white, soft Silver, pale yellow Melting point = solid metallic solid metallic solid -189C Melting point = Melting point = 38C Melting point = 725C Boiling point = 651C Boiling point = 700C Boiling point = -186C Boiling point = Ionization energy = 1140C Ionization energy = 1107C 410 kJ/mol Ionization energy = 1519 kJ/mol Ionization energy = Hydride = UH 504 kJ/mol Hydride = none 736 kJ/mol Oxide = U2O Hydride = VH2 Oxide = none Hydride = TH2 Chloride = UCl Oxide = VO Chloride = none Oxide = TO Chloride = VCl2 Chloride = TCl2

W X Y Z Pale yellow gas Gray-white metallic Gray metallic solid Silver, soft metallic Melting point = solid Melting point = solid -103C Melting point = 327C Melting point = Boiling point = -34C 232C Boiling point = 97.5C Ionization energy = Boiling point = 1620C Boiling point = 880C 1255 kJ/mol 2260C Ionization energy = Ionization energy = Hydride = WH Ionization energy = 715 kJ/mol 498 kJ/mol Oxide = W2O 709 kJ/mol Hydride = YH4 Hydride = ZH Chloride = WCl Hydride = XH4 Oxide = Y2O, YO2 Oxide = Z2O Oxide = XO2, XO Chloride = YCl2, YCl4 Chloride = ZCl Chloride = XCl2, XCl4

Activity modified from http://spraguehs.com/staff/wanak_jeremy/documents/Operation%20periodic%20table.pdf
