McNair, 34 renowned physicist and astronaut who lost his life in the 35 Challenger space shuttle tragedy, and to declare October, etc., 36 respectfully 37 REPORT: 38 Has polled the Concurrent Resolution out majority favorable. 39</p><p>[4026-2] 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 A CONCURRENT RESOLUTION 10 11 TO RECOGNIZE AND HONOR THE MEMORY OF DR. 12 RONALD E. MCNAIR, RENOWNED PHYSICIST AND 13 ASTRONAUT WHO LOST HIS LIFE IN THE CHALLENGER 14 SPACE SHUTTLE TRAGEDY, AND TO DECLARE OCTOBER 15 21, 2017, “DR. RONALD E. MCNAIR DAY” IN SOUTH 16 CAROLINA. 17 18 Whereas, it is altogether fitting and proper that the members of the 19 South Carolina General Assembly should pause in their 20 deliberations to remember and celebrate the life of the late Dr. 21 Ronald E. McNair; and 22 23 Whereas, born in Lake City on October 21, 1950, Ronald McNair 24 was reared in a lowincome family but was undaunted by any 25 hurdles he encountered. Determined to excel in academia and life, 26 he graduated from Carver High School in 1967 as valedictorian, 27 and in 1971 he earned a bachelor’s degree in physics, magna cum 28 laude, from North Carolina A & T University; and 29 30 Whereas, Ronald McNair completed a doctorate in physics from 31 the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1976, and later 32 achieved national recognition for his work in laser physics; and 33 34 Whereas, after being selected by NASA as one of only thirtyfive 35 from a pool of ten thousand applicants, in 1984 Dr. McNair 36 became the second African American selected to make a flight into 37 space when he was assigned to be a mission specialist on the space 38 shuttle Challenger; and 39 40 Whereas, he was a member of the Challenger crew on the fateful 41 day of January 28, 1986, when the space shuttle exploded shortly 42 after liftoff from the Kennedy Space Center; and</p><p>[4026] 3 1 2 Whereas, the recipient of a number of honorary doctorates, 3 fellowships, and commendations, Dr. McNair exemplified 4 excellence in his thirtysix years; and 5 6 Whereas, a dedicated husband and the father of two children, 7 Reginald Ervin and Joy Cheray, he found the time to earn a 8 sixthdegree black belt in karate and become an accomplished 9 saxophonist; and 10 11 Whereas, the members of the South Carolina General Assembly 12 take great pride in honoring this remarkable native son of the 13 Palmetto State for his outstanding contributions and his impressive 14 accomplishments. Now, therefore, 15 16 Be it resolved by the House of Representatives, the Senate 17 concurring: 18 19 That the members of the South Carolina General Assembly, by this 20 resolution, recognize and honor the memory of Dr. Ronald E. 21 McNair, renowned physicist and astronaut who lost his life in the 22 Challenger space shuttle tragedy, and declare October 21, 2017, 23 “Dr. Ronald E.
