<p> Lesson Plans Aboriginal Peoples of Canada – Treaties (Michelle Demaiter) Lesson One Lesson Objective/Key Understandings: The students will learn about the original inhabitants of Canada and treaties. They will learn about how the European people came to Canada and changed the Aboriginal Peoples way of life. They will understand that treaties were signed between the two groups and that many problems were created as a result. They will also realize the on going problems and struggles these have caused for Aboriginal peoples today. </p><p>Materials: - power point - Video </p><p>Introduction (5 minutes) Bell Work: Ask the students - Who are the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada?</p><p>Middle (30 minutes) During this time there will be a lecture and slide show. During this time the students will be required to write a note and the following topics will be covered: - What is a treaty? - Map of treaties - Europeans coming to Canada - Why did the Europeans sign treaties? - Why did the Aboriginal Peoples sign Treaties? - What promises were made under the Number Treaties - Royal Proclamation, 1763 - Indian Act, 1876 - How did treaties affect Aboriginal Peoples? - Treaties Today</p><p>Video: “We are all Treaty People” (20 minutes) http://www.trcm.ca/wearealltreatypeople.html </p><p>Discussion (10 minutes) - discussion on the video and lecture </p><p>Conclusion (5 minutes) Hand out the assignment that the students will be working on tomorrow and explain it. </p><p>Lesson Two: Lesson Objective/Key Understandings: The students will be given an entire class to work on the treaties assignment. </p><p>Materials: - computers Canadian Historic Treaties Assignment The history of treaty processes in Canada has gone through several stages. This activity will give you the opportunity to look at specific treaties (and the context surrounding them). You and a partner will analyze sources and draw conclusions about what was really intended or hoped for in these treaties – and determine whether or not these hopes were realized. You will make a brief oral presentation of your findings to your group. What you will discover is the problems and troubles that these treaties caused for the Aboriginal People. </p><p>For the purpose of this assignment you will focus on the historic number treaties from 1871-1921. These eleven treaties covered different parts of Canada and affected different First Nations groups.
