<p> Name ______</p><p>“Light Refraction”</p><p>3rd Grade Science, Unit 2: “Light and Sound”</p><p>Materials:  A medium pencil  Water.  1 clear container per group (glass, smooth bottom from water bottle cut in half, etc.) </p><p>Procedure with pencil completely out of water:  Stand a medium pencil in an empty glass  Look at it from the side of the glass.  Then look at the pencil from above the glass. </p><p> Lastly, draw what you see from the side of the glass (seen below)</p><p>Procedure with pencil completely in water:</p><p> Put water in the glass so that it is half to three quarters full.  Stand the pencil in the glass so it is completely covered with the water.  Look at it from the side of the glass.  Then look at the pencil from above the glass. </p><p> Lastly, draw what you see from the side of the glass Procedure with pencil half way in water:</p><p> Remove some of the water from the glass so that the pencil would be half covered with the water.  Look at it from the side of the glass.  Then look at the pencil from above the glass. </p><p> Lastly, draw what you see from the side of the glass</p><p>Describe the differences that you noticed when the pencil was half in water and half in air.</p><p>Why do you think this happened?</p>
