Metacognition is the ability of a learner to think about his or her thinking. In this workshop, the presenters will give an overview of metacognition, and why it is important in the education industry and to students. The NWEA College Readiness Linking Study examines the predictive relationship between students' RIT scores on MAP assessments and the college readiness benchmarks of the EXPLORE, PLAN, and ACT achievement tests. Using the results of this study, educators can predict performance on these assessments' reading, english or math tests based on students' corresponding MAP scores in reading, language usage, and general math. Laura Stewart will discuss how literacy develops, why some children have difficulty, and what we can do to teach all students to read.</p><p>Laura Stewart, Vice President of Professional Development at the Rowland Reading Foundation, has been in education for more than 28 years, working as a classroom teacher, building and district administrator, adjunct professor, and director of numerous professional development initiatives. In addition to directing the professional development for Reading First in the state of Wisconsin, Laura directed long-term projects in Los Angeles, New Orleans, Milwaukee, and El Paso on topics from pre-K literacy to differentiated instruction. She has completed extensive postgraduate coursework in literacy education and has presented on the topic of literacy throughout the United States and internationally. To complicate matters, the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) also mandates a standard of paperwork and procedural compliance that all schools, including charter schools, must meet. This lighthearted, solution-driven session will leave administrators with the specific tools they need to help meet the requirements of IDEA, while staying true to the innovation of their charter.</p><p>Robert Compton, Ph.D., Director of Fedeal Progams for the SC Public Charter School District, has spent 13 years in special education specializing in children with intellectual disabilities and autism.
