Sound and Light Study Guide Unit 2 Test: Wednesday, November 6

Vocabulary to know: *prism-a tool used to bend white light into the visible spectrum *opaque-an object that allows no light to pass through *sound-energy that is produced by vibrating an object *transparent-an object that allows almost all light to pass through *pitch-how high or low sound is *translucent-an object that allows a little light to pass through *visible spectrum-the part of the electromagnetic spectrum that we can see *amplitude-the amount of energy sound has *rays-the straight path that light travels in *reflection-when light bounces of an object *refraction-the bending of light as it passes through an object *sound waves-how sound travels *ROYGBIV-the acronym used to remember the colors of the visible spectrum *concave lens-a lens that bends inward and refracts light way from the center of the lens *convex lens-a lens that bulges outward and refracts light towards the center of the lens

Other Information to Know: *Light can be refracted, reflected, or absorbed *A mirror reflects light *In the visible spectrum red is the longest wavelength and has the least amount of energy, violet is the shortest wavelength and has the most energy. *Colors in the visible spectrum: red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet *Sound is caused by an object vibrating *When strings on a guitar are tightened, it causes the strings to vibrate faster producing a higher pitch *A long pipe will produce a lower pitch then a short pipe *The faster an object vibrates the higher the pitch, the slower an object vibrates the lower the pitch *Light and Sound are forms of energy *If an object is hit hard it will have a loud sound, if an object is hit soft it will have a soft sound *A concave lens helps you see faraway objects clearer and a convex lens helps objects that are close appear bigger. *Be able to label a concave and convex lens.

*Be able to give an example of a transparent, translucent, and opaque objects. (an example of each) *Be able to give an example of an object that reflects light and one that refracts light. (an example of each)

Short Answer: Choose one of the following questions to answer. Make sure you use plenty of detail and science vocabulary in your answer. Your answer must be at least 3 sentences.

*Explain how objects can be transparent, translucent, and opaque. Give examples of each. *Explain how concave and convex lenses work. Tell how they bend light. *Explain how the pitch of a sound changes. Give an example of how you can change an objects pitch.
