K63 One-Chip AM Radio Lab

Name: ______Date: ______

Up until now we have been using very simplistic circuits to construct an AM transmitter and receiver. We now want to explore a more in-depth radio receiver system.

Lab Worth: 50 points

2 to 3 people per group

Objective: this lab will demonstrate proper assembly of a complex AM receiver circuit. The students will de able to define, AGC, Sensitivity, and read a technical data sheet of a receiver system.

Following the instructions provided on the handout for this lab, carefully construct the receiver.

Complete the following questions and commands.

Working with your read, first read the handout on the K63 one-chip AM Radio.

Working together carefully assemble the receiver.

Instructor signature of completed project. ______(22 points)

Question 1: Draw a simplified block diagram of this circuit. Describe each section of what is happening. (6 points)

Question 2: Go onto a web browser and download the specifications for the ICMK484 chip. Attach to end of this lab. (2 points)

Question 3: What is the sensitivity for this chip. Hint, detail the various sensitivity issues contained in the data sheet. (4 points) Question 4: What is AGC? Define it. (4 points)

Question 5: The ICMK484 chip cannot actually amplify the RF signal directly, what happens to allow us to receive the audio data from the RF portion of the signal? (4 points)

Question 6: Why is there a ferrite bar to and coil of wire in this circuit? (4 points)

Question 7: Why are we concerned with sensitivity when we receive an RF signal? (4 points)
