<p> Mrs. Loos's Third Grade Curriculum Overview for Third Grade Third Grade is a very busy year. We learn a lot of new material, and we try to have some fun along the way. You have received an "All About Third Grade Packet". Here is a brief "Third Grade" overview: Reading • Scott Foresman Language Arts/Reading Series "Reading Street" • Book Adventure (bookadventure.org) on the computer. Your child will read paperback books at school and at home and take quizzes on the computer. Each student will have a user name and password. • Literature Circles - small groups will read and discuss a book of their choice, addressing vocabulary, main idea, characters, connections to real life, etc. • Non-fiction reading in Social Studies, Science, and Health Spelling • Spelling as part of the Scott Foresman Reading program • Spelling list comes home each week. • Challenge words will be sent home if spelling pretest score on Monday isi 100% or only 1 word wrong • Spelling Test on Fridays - combination of words and dictation sentences • Students are graded on both spelling words and written conventions. Writing • "Write Away" program and Scott Foresman Grammar • Narrative, expository, poems, journals, stories, friendly letters, lists summaries, reports, procedures and directions • Cursive Handwriting Math • MY MATH (all chapters listed in "All About Third Grade" packet) • Opening Eyes / Math in the Mind's Eye supplemental materials • Daily Math Review • Math fact practice - Subt., Add., Mult., Div. • Extension worksheets and Problem Solving packets Social Studies • Scott Foresman "Communities", Grade 3 * Different kinds of communities * Moving to new communities and celebrating cultures * Environments , Climates, Resources in the communityy * Community history * Economics * Citizenship - Rights and Responsibilities * Maps and Globes Science • Scott Foresman Science * Land Features, Water Features, Natural Resources, Earth and Space * Animals and Plants, Interactions * Matter and Energy, Motion and Force * Technology Speaking • Two formal speeches as well as informal reports and projects Health • Nutrition and Staying Healthy • Exercise • Using life skills, making healthful choices, getting along with others Classroom Rules • Be Safe, Be Responsible, Be Respectful </p>
