<p> Sixth Grade Math Syllabus</p><p>Hello! I would like to welcome you and your child to sixth grade math! I am so excited to have the opportunity to inspire your child to reach his or her potential and strive for academic excellence and success. By working together, I know that this can be the best year yet for your student.</p><p>My name is Janelle Tomes, and I have been teaching middle school mathematics for five and a half years. I am happy to be teaching sixth grade math for the second year in a row here at Baker. I very much enjoy teaching at Baker, and I am excited to share my love of math with your child. I strive to help each of my students become mathematical thinkers with strong problem solving skills. I feel that communication with parents/guardians can be a big part of a student’s success, so I hope you will contact me anytime throughout the school year if you have questions or concerns.</p><p>The curriculum for the sixth grade math program is Connected Mathematics 3 (CMP3). This is a curriculum the students will also use in seventh and eighth grade at Campbell Jr. High School. This is a hands-on, inquiry- based program that has proven to improve students’ mathematical thinking. </p><p>Important sixth grade math information pertaining to Connected Math, assignments, and other important details can be found on the Baker Intermediate Facebook page, the sixth grade Facebook page, and will be emailed weekly in the sixth grade parent distribution list. On the back of this letter you will find an introduction to our first unit, Prime Time. Letters for future units will be made available throughout the year on our website, Facebook, and parent distribution list. </p><p>For the 2015-2016 school year, sixth grade math students will be graded using standards based grading. “Standards based grading is a grading process that is designed to give students more directed feedback about specific learning objectives (standards)”, Ken Mattingly. The grading will be broken down as follows: classwork 20%, homework 20%, and standards checks 60%. See below for an explanation of standards-based grading:</p><p>Levels of Understanding </p><p> Mastery (4) – The student consistently meets and often exceeds the content standard. </p><p> Proficient (3) – The student mostly meets the content standard with minimal errors. The student may CHOOSE to do enrichment and redo this work. </p><p> Developing (2) – The student sometimes meets the content standard. The student needs additional support. The student MUST do enrichment and redo this work.</p><p> Beginning (1) – The student barely meets the content standard or does not understand. The student needs additional support.
